Abstract: 1.1. Presentation of the problem. The water-waves problem for an ideal liquid consists of describing the motion of the free surface and the evolution of the velocity field of a layer of perfect, incompressible, irrotational fluid under the influence of gravity. In this paper, we restrict our attention to the case when the surface is a graph parameterized by a function ?(?,X), where t denotes the time variable and X = (Xi,... ,Xd) Rd the horizontal spatial variables. The method developed here works equally well for any integer d > 1, but the only physically relevant cases are of course d = 1 and d ? 2. The layer of fluid is also delimited from below by a not necessarily flat bottom parameterized by a time-independent function b(X). We denote by Q,t the fluid domain at time t. Abstract: Patients with chronic atrophic gastritis or intestinal metaplasia (IM) are at risk for gastric adenocarcinoma. This underscores the importance of diagnosis and risk stratification for these patients. High definition endoscopy with chromoendoscopy (CE) is better than high definition white-light endoscopy alone for this purpose. Virtual CE can guide biopsies for staging atrophic and metaplastic changes and can target neoplastic lesions. Biopsies should be taken from at least two topographic sites (antrum and corpus) and labelled in two separate vials. For patients with mild to moderate atrophy restricted to the antrum there is no evidence to recommend surveillance. In patients with IM at a single location but with a family history of gastric cancer, incomplete IM, or persistent Helicobacter pylori gastritis, endoscopic surveillance with CE and guided biopsies may be considered in 3 years. Patients with advanced stages of atrophic gastritis should be followed up with a high quality endoscopy every 3 years. In patients with dysplasia, in the absence of an endoscopically defined lesion, immediate high quality endoscopic reassessment with CE is recommended. Patients with an endoscopically visible lesion harboring low or high grade dysplasia or carcinoma should undergo staging and treatment. H. pylori eradication heals nonatrophic chronic gastritis, may lead to regression of atrophic gastritis, and reduces the risk of gastric cancer in patients with these conditions, and it is recommended. H. pylori eradication is also recommended for patients with neoplasia after endoscopic therapy. In intermediate to high risk regions, identification and surveillance of patients with precancerous gastric conditions is cost-effective.

Abstract: We produce direct and inverse emulsions stabilized by solid mineral particles. If the total amount of particles is initially insufficient to fully cover the oil-water interfaces, the emulsion droplets coalesce such that the total interfacial area between oil and water is progressively reduced. Since it is likely that the particles are irreversibly adsorbed, the degree of surface coverage by them increases until coalescence is halted. We follow the rate of droplet coalescence from the initial fragmented state to the saturated situation. Unlike surfactant-stabilized emulsions, the coalescence frequency depends on time and particle concentration. Both the transient and final droplet size distributions are relatively narrow and we obtain a linear relation between the inverse average droplet diameter and the total amount of solid particles, with a slope that depends on the mixing intensity. The phenomenology is independent of the mixing type and of the droplet volume fraction allowing the fabrication of both direct and inverse emulsion with average droplet sizes ranging from micron to millimetre.

Abstract: The history of the Arctic Ocean during the Cenozoic era (0–65 million years ago) is largely unknown from direct evidence. Here we present a Cenozoic palaeoceanographic record constructed from >400 m of sediment core from a recent drilling expedition to the Lomonosov ridge in the Arctic Ocean. Our record shows a palaeoenvironmental transition from a warm ‘greenhouse’ world, during the late Palaeocene and early Eocene epochs, to a colder ‘icehouse’ world influenced by sea ice and icebergs from the middle Eocene epoch to the present. For the most recent ~14 Myr, we find sedimentation rates of 1–2 cm per thousand years, in stark contrast to the substantially lower rates proposed in earlier studies; this record of the Neogene reveals cooling of the Arctic that was synchronous with the expansion of Greenland ice (~3.2 Myr ago) and East Antarctic ice (~14 Myr ago). We find evidence for the first occurrence of ice-rafted debris in the middle Eocene epoch (~45 Myr ago), some 35 Myr earlier than previously thought; fresh surface waters were present at ~49 Myr ago, before the onset of ice-rafted debris. Also, the temperatures of surface waters during the Palaeocene/Eocene thermal maximum (~55 Myr ago) appear to have been substantially warmer than previously estimated. The revised timing of the earliest Arctic cooling events coincides with those from Antarctica, supporting arguments for bipolar symmetry in climate change.
