TLDR
The procedures used to develop 17 lines of human embryonic stem cells from the inner cell masses of blastocysts are discussed.Abstract:
This report, first published online on March 3, 2004, discusses the procedures used to develop 17 lines of human embryonic stem cells from the inner cell masses of blastocysts. These cell lines are available to researchers under a Material Transfer Agreement; according to current regulations, the cells cannot be used for research supported by federal funds. These cells are expected to facilitate research on a variety of serious chronic diseases.read more

Somatic cell reprogramming by retroviral vectors encoding Oct3/4. Klf4, c-Myc and Sox2
TL;DR: In this article, a nuclear reprogramming factor has been used to reprogram a differentiated somatic cell to derive an induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell, which can then be used for stem cell therapy.

Cancer Is to Embryology as Mutation Is to Genetics: Hypothesis of the Cancer as Embryological Phenomenon.
Jaime Cofre,Eliana Abdelhay +1 more
TL;DR: This “cancer process” allows the harmonious and coherent construction of the embryo structural base, and its implementation as the embryonic process involves joint regulation of differentiation, proliferation, cell invasion, and migration, enabling the human being recreation of every generation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hepatogenesis of murine induced pluripotent stem cells in 3D micro-cavitary hydrogel system for liver regeneration.
TL;DR: This work aimed to combine existing knowledge on iPSC differentiation with three-dimensional (3D) scaffold platform so as to fabricate implantable constructs for liver regeneration and provide foundation in understanding of i PSC differentiation in 3D engineered environment.
Journal ArticleDOI
Transcription Factors for the Modulation of Pluripotency and Reprogramming
TL;DR: Comparing human and mouse ESCs will shed new light on the design of transcriptional regulatory networks for pluripotency, and the different roles of transcription factors in the modulation of pluripotent states and in the induction of plurIPotent phenotypes are summarized.

Asialoglycoprotein receptor 1 is a specific cell-surface marker for isolating hepatocytes derived from human pluripotent stem cells
Derek T. Peters,Christopher A. Henderson,Curtis R. Warren,Max Friesen,Fang Xia,Caroline E. Becker,Kiran Musunuru,Chad A. Cowan +7 more
TL;DR: expression of cell surface protein ASGR1 can be used to isolate a subpopulation of more mature, homogenous hepatocyte-like cells derived during differentiation from pluripotent stem cells.

Embryonic Stem Cell Lines Derived from Human Blastocysts
James A. Thomson,Joseph Itskovitz-Eldor,Sander S. Shapiro,Michelle A. Waknitz,Swiergiel Jennifer J,Vivienne S. Marshall,Jeffrey M. Jones +6 more
TL;DR: Human blastocyst-derived, pluripotent cell lines are described that have normal karyotypes, express high levels of telomerase activity, and express cell surface markers that characterize primate embryonic stem cells but do not characterize other early lineages.

The serial cultivation of human diploid cell strains.
Leonard Hayflick,P.S. Moorhead +1 more
TL;DR: A consideration of the cause of the eventual degeneration of these strains leads to the hypothesis that non-cumulative external factors are excluded and that the phenomenon is attributable to intrinsic factors which are expressed as senescence at the cellular level.

Formation of Pluripotent Stem Cells in the Mammalian Embryo Depends on the POU Transcription Factor Oct4
Jennifer Nichols,Branko Zevnik,Konstantinos Anastassiadis,Hitoshi Niwa,Daniela Klewe-Nebenius,Ian Chambers,Hans R. Schöler,Austin Smith +7 more
TL;DR: It is reported that the activity of Oct4 is essential for the identity of the pluripotential founder cell population in the mammalian embryo and also determines paracrine growth factor signaling from stem cells to the trophectoderm.
Journal ArticleDOI
Embryonic stem cell lines from human blastocysts: somatic differentiation in vitro.
TL;DR: The derivation of pluripotent embryonic stem (ES) cells from human blastocysts is described, providing a model to study early human embryology, an investigational tool for discovery of novel growth factors and medicines, and a potential source of cells for use in transplantation therapy.

Joseph Itskovitz-Eldor,Maya Schuldiner,Dorit Karsenti,Amir Eden,Ofra Yanuka,Michal Amit,Hermona Soreq,Nissim Benvenisty +7 more
TL;DR: The ability to induce formation of human embryoid bodies that contain cells of neuronal, hematopoietic and cardiac origins will be useful in studying early human embryonic development as well as in transplantation medicine.
