TL;DR: It is argued that for a bicycle-sharing system to be most effective for this customer segment, the system must deploy the right number of bicycles at the right places, because this affects the utilization rate of the bicycles and how bicycles circulate within the system.
Abstract: We develop practical operations research models to support decision making in the design and management of public bicycle-sharing systems. We develop a network flow model with proportionality constraints to estimate the flow of bicycles within the network and the number of trips supported, given an initial allocation of bicycles at each station. We also examine the effectiveness of periodic redistribution of bicycles in the network to support greater flow, and the impact on the number of docks needed. We conduct our numerical analysis using transit data from train operators in Singapore. Given that a substantial proportion of passengers in the train system commute a short distance—more than 16% of passengers alight within two stops from the origin—this forms a latent segment of demand for a bicycle-sharing program. We argue that for a bicycle-sharing system to be most effective for this customer segment, the system must deploy the right number of bicycles at the right places, because this affects the util...

TL;DR: In this paper, a density-functional-theory-based screening among two-dimensional transition metal carbides (MXenes) with a fully O-terminated surface is presented.
Abstract: An efficient, earth-abundant, and low-cost catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for sustainable hydrogen generation. In this work, we present a density-functional-theory-based screening among two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides (MXenes) with a fully O-terminated surface. The catalytic activity of 10 monometal carbides is first investigated, and Ti2CO2 and W2CO2 are found to be highly active catalysts for HER. Then, a volcano plot between the number of electron surface O atoms gains (Ne) and the absolute value of the free energy of hydrogen adsorption (ΔGH) is established. A simple descriptor, Ne, is thus proposed to evaluate the HER performance of O-terminated MXenes. On this basis, TiVCO2 is extracted with improved HER performance than Ti2CO2 and W2CO2 among 7 bimetal carbides. Our study provides new possibilities for cost-effective alternatives to Pt for HER, and, more importantly, develops a simple activity descriptor to efficiently search for highly active HER catalysts.

TL;DR: A novel consensus formation control algorithm is proposed and utilized based on a nonsmooth backstepping design and a global bounded finite-time attitude tracking controller is designed such that the desired attitude can be tracked by the multiple quadrotor aircraft in finite time.
Abstract: The problem of distributed formation control for multiple quadrotor aircraft in the form of leader–follower structure is considered in this paper. Based on a nonsmooth backstepping design, a novel consensus formation control algorithm is proposed and utilized. First, for the position control subsystem, based on the linear quadratic regulator optimal design method, a formation control law for multiple quadrotor aircraft is designed such that the positions of all the quadrotor aircraft converge to the desired formation pattern. The designed formation control law for position systems will generate the desired attitude for the attitude control systems. Second, for the attitude control subsystem described by unit quaternion, by employing the technique of finite-time control and switch control, a global bounded finite-time attitude tracking controller is designed such that the desired attitude can be tracked by the multiple quadrotor aircraft in finite time. Finally, numerical example is performed to demonstrate that all quadrotor aircraft converge to the desired formation pattern in the 3-D-space.
