TL;DR: It is suggested that mTOR inhibition can protect podocytes and prevent progressive diabetic nephropathy and demonstrate the requirement for tightly balanced mTOR activity in podocyte homeostasis.
Abstract: Chronic glomerular diseases, associated with renal failure and cardiovascular morbidity, represent a major health issue. However, they remain poorly understood. Here we have reported that tightly controlled mTOR activity was crucial to maintaining glomerular podocyte function, while dysregulation of mTOR facilitated glomerular diseases. Genetic deletion of mTOR complex 1 (mTORC1) in mouse podocytes induced proteinuria and progressive glomerulosclerosis. Furthermore, simultaneous deletion of both mTORC1 and mTORC2 from mouse podocytes aggravated the glomerular lesions, revealing the importance of both mTOR complexes for podocyte homeostasis. In contrast, increased mTOR activity accompanied human diabetic nephropathy, characterized by early glomerular hypertrophy and hyperfiltration. Curtailing mTORC1 signaling in mice by genetically reducing mTORC1 copy number in podocytes prevented glomerulosclerosis and significantly ameliorated the progression of glomerular disease in diabetic nephropathy. These results demonstrate the requirement for tightly balanced mTOR activity in podocyte homeostasis and suggest that mTOR inhibition can protect podocytes and prevent progressive diabetic nephropathy.

TL;DR: An efficient interface specification as a set of C++ classes is derived that separates the applications from the grid data structures and thus, user implementations become independent of the underlying grid implementation.
Abstract: In a companion paper (Bastian et al. 2007, this issue) we introduced an abstract definition of a parallel and adaptive hierarchical grid for scientific computing. Based on this definition we derive an efficient interface specification as a set of C++ classes. This interface separates the applications from the grid data structures. Thus, user implementations become independent of the underlying grid implementation. Modern C++ template techniques are used to provide an interface implementation without big performance losses. The implementation is realized as part of the software environment DUNE (http://dune-project.org/). Numerical tests demonstrate the flexibility and the efficiency of our approach.

TL;DR: In this paper, the pure dephasing of the optical polarization and the corresponding line shape of absorption spectra in small quantum dots due to the interaction of the exciton both with optical and acoustic phonons is calculated.
Abstract: The pure dephasing of the optical polarization and the corresponding line shape of absorption spectra in small quantum dots due to the interaction of the exciton both with optical and acoustic phonons is calculated. By restricting ourselves to the exciton ground state we obtain a model which is known to be exactly solvable. We study the temperature dependence and the influence of a static electric field. The spectra exhibit strongly non-Lorentzian line shapes including a sharp zero-phonon line. Optical phonons lead to phonon sidebands which may acquire a finite width due to the dispersion of the phonon branch; the width increases with decreasing dot size. Acoustic phonons both due to deformation potential and piezoelectric coupling lead to a broad background in the spectra which is strongly temperature dependent. Typical features of the spectra are qualitatively well reproduced by a perturbative approach based on one-phonon processes. Multiphonon processes, however, give significant contributions in particular in the case of acoustic phonons. Lateral or vertical electric fields lead to an increasing efficiency of the polar interaction mechanisms while deformation potential interaction is much less influenced.

TL;DR: In this article, the XENON1T data was used for searches for new physics with low-energy electronic recoil data recorded with the Xenon1T detector, which enabled one of the most sensitive searches for solar axions, an enhanced neutrino magnetic moment using solar neutrinos, and bosonic dark matter.
Abstract: We report results from searches for new physics with low-energy electronic recoil data recorded with the XENON1T detector. With an exposure of 0.65 tonne-years and an unprecedentedly low background rate of 76±2stat events/(tonne×year×keV) between 1 and 30 keV, the data enable one of the most sensitive searches for solar axions, an enhanced neutrino magnetic moment using solar neutrinos, and bosonic dark matter. An excess over known backgrounds is observed at low energies and most prominent between 2 and 3 keV.
The solar axion model has a 3.4σ significance, and a three-dimensional 90% confidence surface is reported for axion couplings to electrons, photons, and nucleons. This surface is inscribed in the cuboid defined by gae<3.8×10-12, gaeganeff<4.8×10-18, and gaegaγ<7.7×10-22 GeV-1, and excludes either gae=0 or gaegaγ=gaeganeff=0. The neutrino magnetic moment signal is similarly favored over background at 3.2σ, and a confidence interval of μν∈(1.4,2.9)×10-11 μB (90% C.L.) is reported. Both results are in strong tension with stellar constraints. The excess can also be explained by β decays of tritium at 3.2σ significance with a corresponding tritium concentration in xenon of (6.2±2.0)×10-25 mol/mol. Such a trace amount can neither be confirmed nor excluded with current knowledge of its production and reduction mechanisms. The significances of the solar axion and neutrino magnetic moment hypotheses are decreased to 2.0σ and 0.9σ, respectively, if an unconstrained tritium component is included in the fitting. With respect to bosonic dark matter, the excess favors a monoenergetic peak at (2.3±0.2) keV (68% C.L.) with a 3.0σ global (4.0σ local) significance over background.
This analysis sets the most restrictive direct constraints to date on pseudoscalar and vector bosonic dark matter for most masses between 1 and 210 keV/c2. We also consider the possibility that Ar37 may be present in the detector, yielding a 2.82 keV peak from electron capture. Contrary to tritium, the Ar37 concentration can be tightly constrained and is found to be negligible.

TL;DR: An upper limit of 1.1 eV (90% confidence level) is derived on the absolute mass scale of neutrinos on the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino experiment KATRIN, which improves upon previous mass limits from kinematic measurements by almost a factor of 2 and provides model-independent input to cosmological studies of structure formation.
Abstract: We report on the neutrino mass measurement result from the first four-week science run of the Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino experiment KATRIN in spring 2019. Beta-decay electrons from a high-purity gaseous molecular tritium source are energy analyzed by a high-resolution MAC-E filter. A fit of the integrated electron spectrum over a narrow interval around the kinematic end point at 18.57 keV gives an effective neutrino mass square value of (-1.0_{-1.1}^{+0.9}) eV^{2}. From this, we derive an upper limit of 1.1 eV (90% confidence level) on the absolute mass scale of neutrinos. This value coincides with the KATRIN sensitivity. It improves upon previous mass limits from kinematic measurements by almost a factor of 2 and provides model-independent input to cosmological studies of structure formation.
