MATPOWER: Steady-State Operations, Planning, and Analysis Tools for Power Systems Research and Education

MATPOWER is an open-source Matlab-based power system simulation package that provides a high-level set of power flow, optimal power flow (OPF), and other tools targeted toward researchers, educators, and students. The OPF architecture is designed to be extensible, making it easy to add user-defined variables, costs, and constraints to the standard OPF problem. This paper presents the details of the network modeling and problem formulations used by MATPOWER, including its extensible OPF architecture. This structure is used internally to implement several extensions to the standard OPF problem, including piece-wise linear cost functions, dispatchable loads, generator capability curves, and branch angle difference limits. Simulation results are presented for a number of test cases comparing the performance of several available OPF solvers and demonstrating MATPOWER's ability to solve large-scale AC and DC OPF problems.read more

Multi-Attribute Partitioning of Power Networks Based on Electrical Distance
TL;DR: Application of the method to the IEEE 118-bus and a 2383-bus case indicates that when a network is well partitioned into zones, intra-zone transactions have less impact on power flows outside of the zone; i.e., good partitioning reduces loop flows.

Modeling Conditional Forecast Error for Wind Power in Generation Scheduling
TL;DR: In this paper, a statistical model is presented to formulate the conditional distribution of forecast error for multiple wind farms using copula theory, which is then utilized in a stochastic unit commitment model to simulate the day-ahead and real-time scheduling of the modified IEEE RTS-79 system integrating wind power.

Identification of power distribution network topology via voltage correlation analysis
TL;DR: This work uses an approximate model for the grid voltage magnitudes to propose an algorithm that performs well when an exact nonlinear model of the grid voltages is adopted, when realistic power demand profiles are considered, and when the voltage measurements are affected by measurement noise.
