Abstract: Mammary carcinomas that develop in C3(1)/SV40 T-antigen (TAg) transgenic mice have lost the p53-mediated induction of p21, leading to increased cellular proliferation and significant elevations of cyclins and Cdks. To test whether p21 could serve as a target for anticancer therapy for this mammary cancer model, a retroviral delivery system for the inducible expression of p21 was developed. We demonstrate that overexpression of p21 in C3(1)/TAg mammary tumor cells using the retroviral inducible p21 expression system results in increased apoptosis, reduced cell proliferation in vitro and reduced tumor growth in vivo associated with reduced expression of cyclins D1 and E, and Cdks 2, 4, and 6. Reciprocal changes in the expression of p21 and p27Kip1, another cell-cycle regulator, were also observed. Because reduced p21 expression occurs frequently in human breast cancer, restoration of the Cdk inhibitor p21 by gene therapy approaches may provide a method for inhibiting mammary tumor progression. Abstract: In response to recent calls to extend the underlying theories used in the literature (O’Fallon and Butterfield in J Bus Ethics 59(4):375–413, 2005; Craft in J Bus Ethics 117(2):221–259, 2013), we review the usefulness of social norm theory in empirical business ethics research. We begin by identifying the seeds of social norm theory in Adam Smith’s (in: Raphael and Macfie (eds) The Theory of Moral Sentiments, the Glasgow Edition, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1759/1790) seminal work, The Theory of Moral Sentiments. Next, we introduce recent theory in social norm activation by Bicchieri (The grammar of society: The nature and dynamics of social norms, Cambridge University Press, New York, 2006) and compare the new theory to two theoretical frameworks found in the literature: Kohlberg’s (in: Goslin (ed) Handbook of socialization theory and research, Rand McNally, Chicago, IL, 1969; in: Lickona (ed) Moral development and behavior, Holt, Rinehart & Winston, New York, 1976) theory of moral development and Cialdini and Trost’s (in: Gilbert et al. (eds) The handbook of social psychology, Oxford University Press, Boston, 1998) taxonomy of social norms. We argue that the new theory provides useful insights by emphasizing the ability of situational cues and information to generate common expectations for social/moral norms. The theory is particularly useful for empirical research in business ethics because it gives both organizational and individual factors a role in motivating norm-based behavior. To demonstrate this usefulness, we present examples where the theory has been effectively applied in experimental accounting research to generate new insights. We conclude by citing specific examples where the theory may prove useful in empirical business ethics research.

Abstract: Objective: Risk-taking behavior (eg, alcohol abuse, tobacco usage, misuse of prescription medications) among college students is a widespread problem. This study focused not only on the frequency of risky health behaviors in college students, but also the companions with whom they engaged in such behaviors. Methods: Three hundred and twelve college students completed a survey examining the frequency with which they engaged in alcohol, tobacco, and improper prescription medication use, as well as with whom they were most likely to engage in these behaviors. Results: Results indicated that participants were most likely to take health risks when accompanied by someone they consider a friend. Results also indicated gender differences in risk-taking behaviors, as well as an interaction effect between companion and gender. Abstract: Printing and scanning of text documents introduces degradations to the characters which can be modeled. Interestingly, certain combinations of the parameters that govern the degradations introduced by the printing and scanning process affect characters in such a way that the degraded characters have a similar appearance, while other degradations leave the characters with an appearance that is very different. It is well known that (generally speaking), a test set that more closely matches a training set is recognized with higher accuracy than one that matches the training set less well. Likewise, classifiers tend to perform better on data sets that have lower variance. This paper explores an analytical method that uses a formal printer/scanner degradation model to identify the similarity between groups of degraded characters. This similarity is shown to improve the recognition accuracy of a classifier through model directed choice of training set data.
