Abstract: This paper assesses the phenology, population structure and the fruit and seed production of native Brazil nut trees in the state of Roraima, and characterizes the extractive communities and extraction system practiced in this region of Amazonia. Characterization of the extractive communities and extraction system was done through questionnaires and panel discussions conducted between 2005 and 2010. Analyses of population structure, phenology and fruit and seed production were conducted at sites located in the municipalities of Caracarai and Sao Joao da Baliza, installed between the years 2005-2008. We found that the extraction of Brazil nut makes up a significant part of the income of riverine and indigenous communities but is performed with low levels of social organization, little government support and without any control over the processes that can lead to contamination by aflatoxins. The density and productivity of Brazil nut trees are within the range expected for the Amazon region. We found that Brazil nut tree flowering occurs in the dry season, and lasts five to six months. Dispersal of fruits occurs during four to six months in the rainy season, and peaks between April to June.

TL;DR: The environmental education applied within indigenous schools, flowing from categories of fundamental rights overseen in the current Brazilian Constitution, deserves a great deal of reflection and attention by Brazilian educators as mentioned in this paper, who should be aware of the root principle of an environmental education shared by indigenous peoples, being the grounds for other equally relevant sub-principles which demand the involvement of the whole community.
Abstract: The environmental education applied within indigenous schools, flowing from categories of fundamental rights overseen in the current Brazilian Constitution, deserves a great deal of reflection and attention by Brazilian educators. Besides promoting the specific elements proper to schools, they should be aware of the root principle of an environmental education shared by indigenous peoples, being the grounds for other equally relevant sub-principles which demand the involvement of the whole community: the promotion of interculturality, transversality and flexible approaches to environmental education in indigenous schools’ syllabuses, undertaken by children and young natives who require a methodology which is more tuned to their social dynamic and, above all, linked to the natural world. This quality of environmental education upholds a view of the sentiment of fraternity, which we should share equally with present and future generations.

TL;DR: In this article, the root distribution and soil attributes were evaluated in areas under forest conversion to cultivated environments, where the root dry weight (RDW) and root distribution were analyzed in four areas: forest, cupuacu, guarana and annatto.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate soil attributes and root distribution in areas under forest conversion to cultivated environments. The study was carried out in four areas: forest, cupuacu, guarana and annatto, located in the municipality of Canutama, state of Amazonas. Soils and volumetric rings were collected in the layers 0.00 – 0.10; 0.10 – 0.20; 0.20 – 0.30; 0.30 – 0.40; and 0.40 – 0.50 m for analyses of physical and chemical attributes and root distribution. Univariate statistical analyses were carried out, the means were compared with the Tukey’s test (p < 0.05) and Pearson’s correlation (p < 0.05 and < 0.01). The forest area and the cultivated environments present soil chemical limitations for agricultural production, whereas the physical attributes presented satisfactory values. The chemical attributes underwent major changes and degradations upon conversion to agriculture. Major changes were observed in the layers of 0.00 – 0.10 and 0.10 – 0.20 m for the studied areas. Cupuacu cultivation showed higher values of roots dry weight (RDW) and roots distribution (RD), with the highest values found in the 0.00 – 0.10 and 0.10 – 0.20 m layers.
