DNA sequencing with chain-terminating inhibitors
TLDR
A new method for determining nucleotide sequences in DNA is described, which makes use of the 2',3'-dideoxy and arabinon nucleoside analogues of the normal deoxynucleoside triphosphates, which act as specific chain-terminating inhibitors of DNA polymerase.Abstract:
A new method for determining nucleotide sequences in DNA is described. It is similar to the “plus and minus” method [Sanger, F. & Coulson, A. R. (1975) J. Mol. Biol. 94, 441-448] but makes use of the 2′,3′-dideoxy and arabinonucleoside analogues of the normal deoxynucleoside triphosphates, which act as specific chain-terminating inhibitors of DNA polymerase. The technique has been applied to the DNA of bacteriophage ϕX174 and is more rapid and more accurate than either the plus or the minus method.read more

TL;DR: The complete nucleotide sequence of a hepatitis C virus derived from plasma of a human carrier in Japan was determined and a high degree of similarity in the amino acid sequence of the putative core protein would make antigen probes deduced from it suitable for the serological diagnosis of HCV infection.

UNC-40, a C. elegans Homolog of DCC (Deleted in Colorectal Cancer), Is Required in Motile Cells Responding to UNC-6 Netrin Cues

TL;DR: Results suggest that UNC-40 is a component of UNC-6 receptors on motile cells and helps determine the dorsoventral position of cells undergoing purely longitudinal migrations.

The Drosophila single-minded gene encodes a helix-loop-helix protein that acts as a master regulator of CNS midline development
TL;DR: It is proposed that sim functions as a master developmental regulator of the CNS midline lineage and is required for early events in midline cell development, including a synchronized cell division, proper formation of nerve cell precursors, and positive auto-regulation of its midline expression.

Cloning of human, mouse and fission yeast recombination genes homologous to RAD51 and recA
TL;DR: The rad51 homologues fail to complement the DNA repair defect of rad51 mutants of S. cerevisiae, and the 339 amino acid proteins predicted for the two mammalian genes are almost identical and are highly homologous (83%) with the yeast proteins.

TL;DR: The structural diversity and differential distribution of the four synapsins suggest common and different roles of each in the integration of distinct signal transduction pathways that modulate neurotransmitter release in various types of neurons.
