The underlying physics of speckle contrast imaging is reviewed, recent developments to improve the quantitative accuracy of blood flow measures are discussed and applications in neuroscience, dermatology and ophthalmology are reviewed.
Abstract
First introduced in the 1980s, laser speckle contrast imaging is a powerful tool for full-field imaging of blood flow. Recently laser speckle contrast imaging has gained increased attention, in part due to its rapid adoption for blood flow studies in the brain. We review the underlying physics of speckle contrast imaging and discuss recent developments to improve the quantitative accuracy of blood flow measures. We also review applications of laser speckle contrast imaging in neuroscience, dermatology and ophthalmology.

Effect of pulsed electromagnetic fields stimulation on ischemic skin model

TL;DR: In this article, the authors evaluated the effect of pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMF) in improving blood flow reduction and tissue necrosis of ischemic animal induced by skin flap.

Classifying hidden colors behind an opaque layer with the acoustically modulated laser speckle contrast technique.

TL;DR: The acoustically modulated laser speckle contrast technique has been employed to quantify and classify 25 colors hidden behind a 5 mm thick opaque layer with 0.24% transmittance.

Speckle contrast calculation based on pixels correlation: spatial analysis

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed an alternative method that considers correlations of the central pixel with the other pixels, and found a better agreement of the contrast measurement with their numerical calculation.

Biospeckle Analysis and Biofilm Electrostatic Tests, Two Useful Methods in Microbiology

TL;DR: The Biofilm Electrostatic Test (BET) as discussed by the authors was proposed to evaluate the resistance of biofilm-producing microorganisms to a pyro-electrified carrier after only 2 h of incubation.

Numerical model for evaluating the speckle activity and characteristics of bone tissue under the biospeckle laser system

TL;DR: In this paper, the composition and characteristics of biospeckle on the surface of bone tissues were studied and a laser speckle device was used to capture the patterns from fresh pig bone.

Spreading depression of activity in the cerebral cortex

TL;DR: In this article, an interesting response elicited by electrical stimulation was noticed in the cortex of rabbits, and the distinctive feature of this response was a marked, enduring reduction of the "spontaneous" electrical activity of the cortex.

Statistical properties of laser sparkle patterns

TL;DR: In this article, the first order statistics of the observed electric-field strength, the observed light intensity, and observed light phase are examined, and the autocorrelation functions of the complex field and intensity processes are investigated, and that of the electric field is found to be proportional to the Fourier transform of the light intensity distribution incident on the scattering surface.
