The underlying physics of speckle contrast imaging is reviewed, recent developments to improve the quantitative accuracy of blood flow measures are discussed and applications in neuroscience, dermatology and ophthalmology are reviewed.
Abstract
First introduced in the 1980s, laser speckle contrast imaging is a powerful tool for full-field imaging of blood flow. Recently laser speckle contrast imaging has gained increased attention, in part due to its rapid adoption for blood flow studies in the brain. We review the underlying physics of speckle contrast imaging and discuss recent developments to improve the quantitative accuracy of blood flow measures. We also review applications of laser speckle contrast imaging in neuroscience, dermatology and ophthalmology.

Integrating optical coherence tomography with gravimetric and video analysis (OCT-Gravimetry-Video method) for studying the drying process of polystyrene latex system

TL;DR: A system integrating optical coherence tomography with gravimetric and video analysis to non-destructively monitor the drying process of non-film-forming latexes consisting of hard polystyrene spheres over time finds that the particle size affects packing and cracking phenomena remarkably.

Stroke core revealed by tissue scattering using spatial frequency domain imaging

TL;DR: In this paper, the spatial extent of the infarct is estimated using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) techniques, which can be used to follow the progression of ischemia through acute and sub-acute phases of stroke recovery.

All fiber-based illumination system for multi-exposure speckle imaging.

TL;DR: In this article , a fiber-coupled MESI illumination system (FCMESI) was proposed to monitor cerebral blood flow changes using microfluidics flow phantoms.

Localization of blood vessels in in-vitro LSCI images with K-means

TL;DR: In this article, a review of visualization methods for contrast calculation and improvement in laser speckle contrast imaging is presented and the localization of blood vessels in an automatic way through clustering.

Rapid disruption of the cortical microcirculation after mild traumatic brain injury

TL;DR: High-resolution in vivo intracranial imaging in a rodent injury model is used to characterize deficits in the cortical microcirculation during both acute and chronic phases after mild TBI, indicating a major role for vascular dysfunction in even mild forms of TBI.

Spreading depression of activity in the cerebral cortex

TL;DR: In this article, an interesting response elicited by electrical stimulation was noticed in the cortex of rabbits, and the distinctive feature of this response was a marked, enduring reduction of the "spontaneous" electrical activity of the cortex.

Statistical properties of laser sparkle patterns

TL;DR: In this article, the first order statistics of the observed electric-field strength, the observed light intensity, and observed light phase are examined, and the autocorrelation functions of the complex field and intensity processes are investigated, and that of the electric field is found to be proportional to the Fourier transform of the light intensity distribution incident on the scattering surface.
