The underlying physics of speckle contrast imaging is reviewed, recent developments to improve the quantitative accuracy of blood flow measures are discussed and applications in neuroscience, dermatology and ophthalmology are reviewed.
Abstract
First introduced in the 1980s, laser speckle contrast imaging is a powerful tool for full-field imaging of blood flow. Recently laser speckle contrast imaging has gained increased attention, in part due to its rapid adoption for blood flow studies in the brain. We review the underlying physics of speckle contrast imaging and discuss recent developments to improve the quantitative accuracy of blood flow measures. We also review applications of laser speckle contrast imaging in neuroscience, dermatology and ophthalmology.

Dynamic light scattering Monte Carlo: a method for simulating time-varying dynamics for ordered motion in heterogeneous media.

TL;DR: DLS-MC is demonstrated, a numerical method by which the electric field autocorrelation function may be calculated for arbitrary geometries if the optical properties and particle motion are known or assumed and requires no assumptions regarding the number of scattering events, the final form of the autoc orrelation function, or the degree of correlation between scattering events.

Laser speckle contrast imaging: age-related changes in microvascular blood flow and correlation with pulse-wave velocity in healthy subjects.

TL;DR: The aging effect over microvascular parameters (perfusion and moving blood cells velocity, MBCV) and macrocirculation parameters (pulse-wave velocity, PWV) are assessed to assess and the relationship between these parameters is studied to study.

How to build a Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging (LSCI) system to monitor blood flow.

TL;DR: This work shows how to build a LSCI setup and demonstrates its ability to monitor blood flow changes in the brain during an animal experiment.

Single-shot memory-effect video.

TL;DR: This work combines traditional memory effect imaging with coded-aperture-based computational imaging techniques, which enables for the first time single-shot video of arbitrary dynamic scenes through dynamic, opaque media.

Laser speckle analysis of retinal vascular dynamics.

TL;DR: Image segmentation and vessel recognition algorithms together with response mapping allow us to analyze diameter changes and blood flow responses in the intact retinal network upon systemic administration of the vasoconstrictor angiotensin II, the vasodilator acetylcholine or on the changing level of anesthesia in in vivo rat preparations.

Spreading depression of activity in the cerebral cortex

TL;DR: In this article, an interesting response elicited by electrical stimulation was noticed in the cortex of rabbits, and the distinctive feature of this response was a marked, enduring reduction of the "spontaneous" electrical activity of the cortex.

Statistical properties of laser sparkle patterns

TL;DR: In this article, the first order statistics of the observed electric-field strength, the observed light intensity, and observed light phase are examined, and the autocorrelation functions of the complex field and intensity processes are investigated, and that of the electric field is found to be proportional to the Fourier transform of the light intensity distribution incident on the scattering surface.
