The underlying physics of speckle contrast imaging is reviewed, recent developments to improve the quantitative accuracy of blood flow measures are discussed and applications in neuroscience, dermatology and ophthalmology are reviewed.Abstract:
First introduced in the 1980s, laser speckle contrast imaging is a powerful tool for full-field imaging of blood flow. Recently laser speckle contrast imaging has gained increased attention, in part due to its rapid adoption for blood flow studies in the brain. We review the underlying physics of speckle contrast imaging and discuss recent developments to improve the quantitative accuracy of blood flow measures. We also review applications of laser speckle contrast imaging in neuroscience, dermatology and ophthalmology.read more

Effects of speckle/pixel size ratio on temporal and spatial speckle-contrast analysis of dynamic scattering systems: Implications for measurements of blood-flow dynamics
Julio C. Ramirez-San-Juan,E. Mendez-Aguilar,N. Salazar-Hermenegildo,A. Fuentes-Garcia,Ruben Ramos-Garcia,Bernard Choi +5 more
TL;DR: The data suggest that the temporal LSCI algorithm is more accurate at assessing the relative changes in flow speed than the spatial algorithm.

Surgery-related thrombosis critically affects the brain infarct volume in mice following transient middle cerebral artery occlusion.

TL;DR: It is hypothesized that suture-induced thrombosis causes infarct volume variability due to insufficient reperfusion after suture withdrawal, and Appropriate heparin management provides a useful approach for improving reproducibility of reperfusions model in mice.

Coherence switching of a degenerate VECSEL for multimodality imaging
TL;DR: In this article, a degenerate laser system that can be switched between a large number of mutually incoherent spatial modes and few-mode operation is presented, where low spatial coherence illumination is used for traditional high-speed videomicroscopy and high spatial coherent illumination is employed to extract dynamic information of flow processes.

Multiscale Entropy Study of Medical Laser Speckle Contrast Images
TL;DR: It is shown that when time evolution of L SCI single pixels is studied, MSE presents a monotonic decreasing pattern, similar to the one of Gaussian white noises, when the mean of LSCI pixel values is computed in a region of interest (ROI) and followed with time, M SE pattern becomes close to theOne of LDF data, for ROI large enough.

TL;DR: A multispeckle DCS system that is based on a SPAD camera serves as a scalable method toward high-sensitivity DCS measurements, thus enabling both high sensitivity to the cortex and high SNR.

Spreading depression of activity in the cerebral cortex
TL;DR: In this article, an interesting response elicited by electrical stimulation was noticed in the cortex of rabbits, and the distinctive feature of this response was a marked, enduring reduction of the "spontaneous" electrical activity of the cortex.

Statistical properties of laser sparkle patterns
TL;DR: In this article, the first order statistics of the observed electric-field strength, the observed light intensity, and observed light phase are examined, and the autocorrelation functions of the complex field and intensity processes are investigated, and that of the electric field is found to be proportional to the Fourier transform of the light intensity distribution incident on the scattering surface.
