The underlying physics of speckle contrast imaging is reviewed, recent developments to improve the quantitative accuracy of blood flow measures are discussed and applications in neuroscience, dermatology and ophthalmology are reviewed.
Abstract
First introduced in the 1980s, laser speckle contrast imaging is a powerful tool for full-field imaging of blood flow. Recently laser speckle contrast imaging has gained increased attention, in part due to its rapid adoption for blood flow studies in the brain. We review the underlying physics of speckle contrast imaging and discuss recent developments to improve the quantitative accuracy of blood flow measures. We also review applications of laser speckle contrast imaging in neuroscience, dermatology and ophthalmology.

Advances in Speckle Metrology

TL;DR: Different methods to process speckle fringes have made analysis equivalent to that of classical interferometry, yet can be applied to all types of real-world specimen, which has seen a surge in development in the past 10 years.

Head holder and cranial window design for sequential magnetic resonance imaging and optical imaging in awake mice

TL;DR: An animal preparation protocol to achieve quantitative measures from both MRI and advanced optical techniques, including laser speckle contrast imaging and two-photon microscopy, in murine models to address the challenge of interpretation.

Rapid antimicrobial susceptibility test using spatiotemporal analysis of laser speckle dynamics of bacterial colonies

TL;DR: A rapid AST based on laser speckle formation that enables rapid detection of bacterial growth, with the same sample preparation protocol as in solid-based ASTs, and can be a powerful tool for rapid, simple, and low-cost AST.

Characterization of cerebral blood flow dynamics with multiscale entropy

TL;DR: This work considers the permeability of blood–brain barrier (BBB) and shows that alterations associated with the BBB opening can be revealed by the analysis of blood flow at the level of macrocerebral vessels.

Acoustic resolution photoacoustic flowmetry

TL;DR: In this article, a dual-mode imaging setup was developed, capable of acquiring photoacoustic signals concurrently with optical microscopy images, which allowed both blood microstructure and flow velocity to be resolved simultaneously.

Spreading depression of activity in the cerebral cortex

TL;DR: In this article, an interesting response elicited by electrical stimulation was noticed in the cortex of rabbits, and the distinctive feature of this response was a marked, enduring reduction of the "spontaneous" electrical activity of the cortex.

Statistical properties of laser sparkle patterns

TL;DR: In this article, the first order statistics of the observed electric-field strength, the observed light intensity, and observed light phase are examined, and the autocorrelation functions of the complex field and intensity processes are investigated, and that of the electric field is found to be proportional to the Fourier transform of the light intensity distribution incident on the scattering surface.
