Pancreatic cancer: A review of clinical diagnosis, epidemiology, treatment and outcomes

TL;DR: This review aims to outline the most up-to-date knowledge of pancreatic adenocarcinoma risk, diagnostics, treatment and outcomes, while identifying gaps that aim to stimulate further research in this understudied malignancy.

TL;DR: A conservative approach is recommended for asymptomatic MCN and IPMN, and Lifelong follow-up of IPMN is recommended in patients who are fit for surgery.

Pancreatic adenocarcinoma, Version 2.2021

Margaret A. Tempero, +35 more
Abstract: Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death among men and women in the United States. A major challenge in treatment remains patients' advanced disease at diagnosis. The NCCN Guidelines for Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma provides recommendations for the diagnosis, evaluation, treatment, and follow-up for patients with pancreatic cancer. Although survival rates remain relatively unchanged, newer modalities of treatment, including targeted therapies, provide hope for improving patient outcomes. Sections of the manuscript have been updated to be concordant with the most recent update to the guidelines. This manuscript focuses on the available systemic therapy approaches, specifically the treatment options for locally advanced and metastatic disease.

Typical and atypical manifestations of serous cystadenoma of the pancreas: imaging findings with pathologic correlation.

TL;DR: The purpose of this article is to present the typical and atypical manifestations of serous cystadenoma, which can be visualized with cross-sectional imaging.

Targeted DNA Sequencing Reveals Patterns of Local Progression in the Pancreatic Remnant Following Resection of Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasm (IPMN) of the Pancreas.

TL;DR: Three mechanisms underlying local progression in the remnant pancreas are identified: residual microscopic disease at the resection margin, intraparenchymal spread of neoplastic cells, leading to an anatomically separate but genetically related recurrence, and multifocal disease with genetically distinct lesions.

The long term risk of malignancy in patients with branch duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the pancreas.

TL;DR: In patients with branch duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the pancreas (BD-IPMN), the risk of malignant evolution persists after 60 months F/U including invasive carcinomas including invasive advanced carcinoma.
Journal ArticleDOI

Preoperative Predictors of Malignancy in Pancreatic Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Neoplasms

TL;DR: Malignancy of IPMNs is suggested by new-onset diabetes mellitus, jaundice, and elevations in serum glucose or alkaline phosphatase levels, which may help guide patient and physician decision making.
