Abstract: Designed as a high-capacity, high-rate, and long-cycle life anode for sodium-ion batteries, ultrasmall Sn nanoparticles (≈8 nm) homogeneously embedded in spherical carbon network (denoted as 8-Sn@C) is prepared using an aerosol spray pyrolysis method. Instrumental analyses show that 8-Sn@C nanocomposite with 46 wt% Sn and a BET surface area of 150.43 m2 g−1 delivers an initial reversible capacity of ≈493.6 mA h g−1 at the current density of 200 mA g−1, a high-rate capacity of 349 mA h g−1 even at 4000 mA g−1, and a stable capacity of ≈415 mA h g−1 after 500 cycles at 1000 mA g−1. The remarkable electrochemical performance of 8-Sn@C is owing to the synergetic effects between the well-dispersed ultrasmall Sn nanoparticles and the conductive carbon network. This unique structure of very-fine Sn nanoparticles embedded in the porous carbon network can effectively suppress the volume fluctuation and particle aggregation of tin during prolonged sodiation/desodiation process, thus solving the major problems of pulverization, loss of electrical contact and low utilization rate facing Sn anode.

Abstract: Background Hip fractures are always associated with a high postoperative mortality, the preoperative predictors for mortality have neither been well identified or summarised. This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to identify the preoperative non-interventional predictors for mortality in hip fracture patients, especially focused on 1 year mortality. Methods Non-interventional studies were searched in Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane central database (all to February 26th, 2011). Only prospective studies and retrospective studies with prospective collected data were included. Qualities of included studies were assessed by a standardised scale previous reported for observational studies. The effects of individual studies were combined with the study quality score using a previous reported model of best-evidence synthesis. The hazard ratios of strong evidence predictors were combined only by high quality studies. Results 75 included studies with 94 publications involving 64,316 patients were included and the available observations was a heterogeneous group. The overall inpatient or 1 month mortality was 13.3%, 3–6 months was 15.8%, 1 year 24.5% and 2 years 34.5%. There were strong evidence for 12 predictors, including advanced age, male gender, nursing home or facility residence, poor preoperative walking capacity, poor activities of daily living, higher ASA grading, poor mental state, multiple comorbidities, dementia or cognitive impairment, diabetes, cancer and cardiac disease. We also identified 7 moderate evidence and 12 limited evidence mortality predictors, and only the race was identified as the conflicting evidence predictor. Conclusion Whilst there is no conclusive evidence of the preoperative predictors for mortality following hip fractures, special attention should be paid to the above 12 strong evidence predictors. Future researches were still needed to evaluate the effects of these predictors.

Abstract: The development of highly active and stable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is crucial for improving the efficiency of water splitting and metal-air battery devices. Herein, an efficient strategy is demonstrated for making the oxygen vacancies dominated cobalt-nickel sulfide interface porous nanowires (NiS2 /CoS2 -O NWs) for boosting OER catalysis through in situ electrochemical reaction of NiS2 /CoS2 interface NWs. Because of the abundant oxygen vacancies and interface porous nanowires structure, they can catalyze the OER efficiently with a low overpotential of 235 mV at j = 10 mA cm-2 and remarkable long-term stability in 1.0 m KOH. The home-made rechargeable portable Zn-air batteries by using NiS2 /CoS2 -O NWs as the air-cathode display a very high open-circuit voltage of 1.49 V, which can maintain for more than 30 h. Most importantly, a highly efficient self-driven water splitting device is designed with NiS2 /CoS2 -O NWs as both anode and cathode, powered by two-series-connected NiS2 /CoS2 -O NWs-based portable Zn-air batteries. The present work opens a new way for designing oxygen vacancies dominated interface nanowires as highly efficient multifunctional electrocatalysts for electrochemical reactions and renewable energy devices.
