TL;DR: Fluorescence studies revealed that a methanol suspension of one of these mixed crystals, MZMOF-3, exhibits selective detection of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), a biomarker for ovarian cancer and other gynecologic cancers, and has the potential to act as a self-referencing and self-calibrating fluorescent indicator for LPA.
Abstract: Two lanthanide zeolite-like metal–organic frameworks (Ln-ZMOFs) with rho topology, Tb-ZMOF and Eu-ZMOF, were constructed by self-assembly of a 4-connected lanthanide molecular building block and a bipyridine-dicarboxylate ligand. Varying the Tb3+ and Eu3+ ratio during synthesis afforded three mixed-crystal isostructural MZMOFs with variable Eu:Tb stoichiometry. Fluorescence studies revealed that a methanol suspension of one of these mixed crystals, MZMOF-3, exhibits selective detection of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), a biomarker for ovarian cancer and other gynecologic cancers. Linear correlation between the integrated fluorescence intensity and the concentration of LPA was observed, enabling quantitative analysis of LPA in physiologically relevant ranges (1.4–43.3 μM). MZMOF-3 therefore has the potential to act as a self-referencing and self-calibrating fluorescent indicator for LPA.

Abstract: To dramatically stabilize the nanostructure of Sn and achieve ultrahigh reversibility of conversion reactions in lithiated SnO2 , a series of SnO2 -transition metal-graphite ternary nanocomposites are produced by ball milling, demonstrating high initial Coulombic efficiencies up to 88.6%, high reversible capacity (>700 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1 ), and ultralong cycling life (90.3% of capacity retention after 1300 cycles).

TL;DR: Both theoretical and experimental studies suggest that lead(II) in combination with water catalyses a series of cascading steps for lactic acid formation, including the isomerization of glucose formed via the hydrolysis of cellulose into fructose, the selective cleavage of the C3-C4 bond of fructose to trioses and the selective conversion of trioses into lactic Acid.
Abstract: The direct transformation of cellulose, which is the main component of lignocellulosic biomass, into building-block chemicals is the key to establishing biomass-based sustainable chemical processes. Only limited successes have been achieved for such transformations under mild conditions. Here we report the simple and efficient chemocatalytic conversion of cellulose in water in the presence of dilute lead(II) ions, into lactic acid, which is a high-value chemical used for the production of fine chemicals and biodegradable plastics. The lactic acid yield from microcrystalline cellulose and several lignocellulose-based raw biomasses is >60% at 463 K. Both theoretical and experimental studies suggest that lead(II) in combination with water catalyses a series of cascading steps for lactic acid formation, including the isomerization of glucose formed via the hydrolysis of cellulose into fructose, the selective cleavage of the C3-C4 bond of fructose to trioses and the selective conversion of trioses into lactic acid.

TL;DR: A systematic study of spinel ZnFex Co2-x O4 oxides toward the OER is presented and a highly active catalyst superior to benchmark IrO2 is developed and the distinctive OER activity is found to be dominated by the metal-oxygen covalency and an enlarged CoO covalencies by 10-30 at% Fe substitution is responsible for the activity enhancement.
Abstract: Cobalt-containing spinel oxides are promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) owing to their remarkable activity and durability. However, the activity still needs further improvement and related fundamentals remain untouched. The fact that spinel oxides tend to form cation deficiencies can differentiate their electrocatalysis from other oxide materials, for example, the most studied oxygen-deficient perovskites. Here, a systematic study of spinel ZnFex Co2-x O4 oxides (x = 0-2.0) toward the OER is presented and a highly active catalyst superior to benchmark IrO2 is developed. The distinctive OER activity is found to be dominated by the metal-oxygen covalency and an enlarged CoO covalency by 10-30 at% Fe substitution is responsible for the activity enhancement. While the pH-dependent OER activity of ZnFe0.4 Co1.6 O4 (the optimal one) indicates decoupled proton-electron transfers during the OER, the involvement of lattice oxygen is not considered as a favorable route because of the downshifted O p-band center relative to Fermi level governed by the spinel's cation deficient nature.

TL;DR: A new type of edge state is found: one residing on the bearded edge that has never been predicted or observed in graphene, and can be classified as a Tamm-like state lacking any surface defect.
Abstract: The propagation of light in photonic crystals with a honeycomb structure mirrors the behaviour of charges in graphene, therefore allowing for the investigation of electronic properties that cannot otherwise be accessed in graphene itself. This approach is now used to predict unexpected edge states that localize in the bearded edges of hexagonal lattices.
