TL;DR: In this paper, the application of DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) in conjunction with financial ratios to help bank regulators in Taiwan not only distinguish the efficient banks from the inefficient ones but also to gain insight into various financial dimensions that somehow link to the bank's financial operational decisions.
Abstract: While financial ratios are currently the method most often used to evaluate a bank's performance, there is no clear-cut rationale which would allow one to acquire a composite score on the overall financial soundness of a bank. This paper demonstrates the application of DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) in conjunction with financial ratios to help bank regulators in Taiwan not only to distinguish the efficient banks from the inefficient ones but also to gain insight into various financial dimensions that somehow link to the bank's financial operational decisions.

TL;DR: The genome sequence of the tropical epiphytic orchid Phalaenopsis equestris, a frequently used parent species for orchid breeding, is presented and evidence for an orchid-specific paleopolyploidy event that preceded the radiation of most orchid clades is found.
Abstract: Orchidaceae, renowned for its spectacular flowers and other reproductive and ecological adaptations, is one of the most diverse plant families. Here we present the genome sequence of the tropical epiphytic orchid Phalaenopsis equestris, a frequently used parent species for orchid breeding. P. equestris is the first plant with crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) for which the genome has been sequenced. Our assembled genome contains 29,431 predicted protein-coding genes. We find that contigs likely to be underassembled, owing to heterozygosity, are enriched for genes that might be involved in self-incompatibility pathways. We find evidence for an orchid-specific paleopolyploidy event that preceded the radiation of most orchid clades, and our results suggest that gene duplication might have contributed to the evolution of CAM photosynthesis in P. equestris. Finally, we find expanded and diversified families of MADS-box C/D-class, B-class AP3 and AGL6-class genes, which might contribute to the highly specialized morphology of orchid flowers.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used photoemission spectroscopy and quantum transport to elucidate the topology of the room temperature magnet Co2MnGa and observed sharp bulk Weyl fermion line dispersions indicative of nontrivial topological invariants present in the magnetic phase.
Abstract: Topological matter is known to exhibit unconventional surface states and anomalous transport owing to unusual bulk electronic topology. In this study, we use photoemission spectroscopy and quantum transport to elucidate the topology of the room temperature magnet Co2MnGa. We observe sharp bulk Weyl fermion line dispersions indicative of nontrivial topological invariants present in the magnetic phase. On the surface of the magnet, we observe electronic wave functions that take the form of drumheads, enabling us to directly visualize the crucial components of the bulk-boundary topological correspondence. By considering the Berry curvature field associated with the observed topological Weyl fermion lines, we quantitatively account for the giant anomalous Hall response observed in this magnet. Our experimental results suggest a rich interplay of strongly interacting electrons and topology in quantum matter.

TL;DR: An association of the Asian economic crisis with a sharp increase in suicide mortality in some, but not all, East/Southeast Asian countries is suggested, and that these increases were most closely associated with rises in unemployment.
