Quantitative phase imaging of live cells using fast Fourier phase microscopy

Abstract: Using the decomposition of an image field in two spatial components that can be controllably shifted in phase with respect to each other, a new quantitative-phase microscope has been developed. The new instrument, referred to as the fast Fourier phase microscope (f-FPM), provides a factor of 100 higher acquisition rate compared with our previously reported Fourier phase microscope. The resulting quantitative-phase images are characterized by diffraction limited transverse resolution and path-length stability better than 2 nm at acquisition rates of 10 frames/s or more. These features make the f-FPM particularly appealing for investigating the structure and dynamics of live cells over a broad range of time scales. In addition, we demonstrate the possibility of examining subcellular structures by digitally processing the amplitude and phase information provided by the instrument. Thus we developed software that can emulate phase contrast and differential interference contrast microscopy images by numerically processing FPM images. This approach adds the flexibility of digitally varying the phase shift between the two interfering beams. The images obtained appear as if they were recorded by variable phase contrast or differential interference contrast microscopes that deliver an enhanced view to the subcellular structure when compared with the typical commercial microscope.

The use of dialectical behavior therapy skills training as stand-alone treatment: a systematic review of the treatment outcome literature.

Abstract: Objective Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) skills training is currently being administered as stand-alone treatment across a variety of clinical settings, serving diverse client populations. However, there is little empirical support for this use. Method In this systematic review, we identified 17 trials employing a treatment that included DBT skills training in the absence of the other DBT modalities. Results While the literature reviewed provides preliminary evidence of the utility of DBT skills training to address a range of mental health and behavioral problems, methodological limitations of published studies preclude us from drawing strong conclusions about the efficacy of skills training as a stand-alone treatment. Conclusion We present an overview of the implementation of DBT skills training across clinical settings and populations. We found preliminary evidence supporting the use of DBT skills training as a method of addressing a range of behaviors. We provide recommendations for future research.

Earthquake Safety Training through Virtual Drills

Abstract: Recent popularity of consumer-grade virtual reality devices, such as the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, has enabled household users to experience highly immersive virtual environments. We take advantage of the commercial availability of these devices to provide an immersive and novel virtual reality training approach, designed to teach individuals how to survive earthquakes, in common indoor environments. Our approach makes use of virtual environments realistically populated with furniture objects for training. During a training, a virtual earthquake is simulated. The user navigates in, and manipulates with, the virtual environments to avoid getting hurt, while learning the observation and self-protection skills to survive an earthquake. We demonstrated our approach for common scene types such as offices, living rooms and dining rooms. To test the effectiveness of our approach, we conducted an evaluation by asking users to train in several rooms of a given scene type and then test in a new room of the same type. Evaluation results show that our virtual reality training approach is effective, with the participants who are trained by our approach performing better, on average, than those trained by alternative approaches in terms of the capabilities to avoid physical damage and to detect potentially dangerous objects.

Gender Relations in Addiction and Recovery

Abstract: This article adds to the growing but still limited literature on the role of gender relations in women's addiction and recovery. In-depth interviews were conducted with 35 women randomly drawn from a large study of drug-abusing pregnant women who were recruited into an HIV/AIDS prevention program. These interviews explored conditions surrounding initiation and continuation of drug use. past and current sexual/love relationships, and experiences in the HIV/AIDS prevention program. Throughout the interviews, the women participants consistently voiced feelings stressing the importance of relationships in their lives. At the same time, they expressed a sense of disconnection and deprivation in those relationships. Four areas in which relationships with male partners ran counter to women's needs for connection are discussed in this article: initiation into drug use and supply of drugs, disappointment in men for failure to be providers, experience of violence, and opposition to treatment.
