Abstract: A double-hyperfragment event has been found in a hybrid-emulsion experiment. It is identified uniquely as the sequential decay of ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{6}\mathrm{He}$ emitted from a ${\ensuremath{\Xi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ hyperon nuclear capture at rest. The mass of ${}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}^{6}\mathrm{He}$ and the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ interaction energy $\ensuremath{\Delta}{B}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ have been measured for the first time devoid of the ambiguities due to the possibilities of excited states. The value of $\ensuremath{\Delta}{B}_{\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{\Lambda}}$ is $1.01\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{0.20}_{\ensuremath{-}0.11}^{+0.18}\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}\mathrm{MeV}$. This demonstrates that the $\ensuremath{\Lambda}\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\Lambda}$ interaction is weakly attractive.

Abstract: A new coupled mode formulation for parallel dielectric waveguides is described. The results apply to any guided modes (TE, TM, or hybrid) in waveguides of arbitrary cross-section, dissimilar index, and nonidentical shape. Additional index perturbations not included within the waveguides are encompassed by the theory. Propagation constants and mode patterns for the coupled modes computed according to this theory are shown to agree very well with numerical solutions for the system modes when the latter can be determined. Moreover, the new results are more accurate than those obtained from prior coupled mode formulations. It is shown that even for Iossless guides the coupling coefficients from waveguide "b" to "a" and from "a" to "b," described by k ab and k ba respectively, are not related by their complex conjugates if the guides are not identical.

Abstract: Considerable progress has been made in behavioral genetics toward providing theoretical accounts of individual differences One theoretical task, however, has been largely neglected—that of constructing evolutionary accounts of behaviorally relevant genetic variance We attempt to address this task with respect to the genetic variance underlying sociosexuality, that is, the differences in the implicit prerequisites (in terms of time, attachment, commitment, etc) to entering a sexual relationship Specifically, we argue that genetic variance on this trait for females could have been maintained through frequency-dependent selection In our evolutionary past, restricted females-those who require relatively more time, attachment, and commitment-could have benefited through paternal investment in their offspring Unrestricted females—those who require relatively less time, attachment, and commitment—could have benefited through the quality of their mate's genes passed on to their sons Moreover, the value of these alternate „strategies” could have been frequency-dependent One prediction that follows from this evolutionary history is tested and supported in three studies Those females genetically predisposed to be unrestricted are found to produce relatively more sons than females predisposed to be restricted Additional predictions are offered and alternative accounts are discussed

Abstract: • Patients successfully treated during a 3-month period with either imipramine hydrochloride pharmacotherapy, cognitive therapy, or combined cognitive-pharmacotherapy were monitored during a 2-year posttreatment follow-up period. Half of the patients treated with pharmacotherapy alone continued to receive study medications for the first year of the follow-up. All other patients discontinued treatment at the end of the acute treatment phase. Patients treated with cognitive therapy (either alone or in combination with medication) evidenced less than half the rate of relapse shown by patients in the medication—on continuation condition, and their rate did not differ from that of patients provided with continuation medication. It appears that providing cognitive therapy during acute treatment prevents relapse. Whether this preventive effect extends to recurrence remains to be determined.
