TLDR
A simple and rapid screening method using the yeast two-hybrid system based on the ligand-dependent interaction of nuclear hormone receptors with coactivators to test the estrogenic activity of chemicals.
Abstract
One of the urgent tasks in understanding endocrine disruptors (EDs) is to compile a list of suspected substances among the huge number of chemicals by using the screening test method. We developed a simple and rapid screening method using the yeast two-hybrid system based on the ligand-dependent interaction of nuclear hormone receptors with coactivators. To date, we have tested the estrogenic activity of more than 500 chemicals including natural substances, medicines, pesticides, and industrial chemicals. 64 compounds were evaluated as positive, and most of these demonstrated a common structure; phenol with a hydrophobic moiety at the para-position without bulky groups at the ortho-position. These results are expected to facilitate further risk assessment of chemicals.

In vivo and in vitro estrogen bioactivities of alkyl parabens.

TL;DR: The uterotrophic effects of Pbens in Im mice have a positive correlation with the side-chain length of the ester group of these compounds, indicating that Im were more susceptible than Ovx and IW to these effects.

Oxidation of bisphenol A, 17β-estradiol, and 17α-ethynyl estradiol and byproduct estrogenicity

TL;DR: Oxidation of test compounds with chlorine and ozone resulted in a similar estrogenicity trend, with a relative higher level of estrogenicity elicited during the early phases of oxidation, which gradually dissipated over the extended exposure time to a stable point.

A review of phytoestrogens: Their occurrence and fate in the environment

TL;DR: This review will summarize estrogenic activities or estrogenic potencies of phytoestrogens by different bioassays, and compare their urinary excretion rates to that of estrone, which suggests that most phy toestrogens may occur in municipal wastewaters.

Endocrine activity of alternatives to BPA found in thermal paper in Switzerland.

TL;DR: A substitution of BPA by BPF and BPS should be considered with caution, since they exhibit almost a similar endocrine activity as BPA, however further analyses are needed to better characterize their effects on the hormonal system.

Ozonation and activated carbon treatment of sewage effluents: removal of endocrine activity and cytotoxicity.

TL;DR: An effective removal or transformation of toxicants with receptor-mediated mode of action and non-specific toxicants during O(3) and AC is confirmed, although due to the limited extractability, polar ozonation by-products were neglected for toxicity analysis, and hence non- specific toxicity after O( 3) is underestimated.

Our Stolen Future

TL;DR: The cause of disruptions in animal breeding cycles, accompanied by increases in birth defects, sexual abnormalities and reproductive failure, is traced to the pervasive presence in the environment of chemicals that mimic hormones and trick the reproductive system.
