Early life environmental factors associated with autism spectrum disorder symptoms in children at age 2 years: A birth cohort study

TL;DR: The prospective associations between early life environmental factors and autism spectrum disorder symptoms in children at the age of 2 years in a population-derived birth cohort, the Barwon Infant Study are reported.
Journal ArticleDOI

Exposure to a high dose of amoxicillin causes behavioral changes and oxidative stress in young zebrafish

TL;DR: The present data reinforce the relation of the gut-brain-axis and the use of zebrafish as a useful tool to investigate new therapies for autistic traits and note a central effect related to the exposition of amoxicillin, the same as observed in murine models.

Dietary Phytochemicals as Neurotherapeutics for Autism Spectrum Disorder: Plausible Mechanism and Evidence.

TL;DR: This chapter discusses plausible mechanisms and evidence from their own and other scientific research for the utilization of curcumin, resveratrol, naringenin, and sulforaphane as neurotherapeutics for ASD.
Journal ArticleDOI

Reduced endogenous urinary total antioxidant power and its relation of plasma antioxidant activity of superoxide dismutase in individuals with autism spectrum disorder.

TL;DR: Stepwise regression analysis revealed that urinary TAP levels and plasma SOD levels can differences in the biomarkers and the SRS scores between the ASD group and the control group, suggesting the endogenous antioxidant capacity may be deficient without altered urinary HEL and 8‐OHdG levels in individuals with ASD.

Protective effect of magnolol on TBHP-induced injury in H460 cells partially via a p53 dependent mechanism.

TL;DR: Taking together, Magnolol was effective against DNA single strand breaks (SSB) formation, cytotoxicity and lipid peroxidation induced by TBHP, and its effects on p53 phosphorylation, PTEN and Aktosphorylation were due to its antioxidative function, and partiallyvia a p53 dependent mechanism in this protective effects.

Role of free radicals and catalytic metal ions in human disease: an overview.

TL;DR: The chapter discusses the metabolism of transition metals, such as iron and copper, and the chelation therapy that is an approach to site-specific antioxidant protection.
Journal ArticleDOI

Nitric oxide: a cytotoxic activated macrophage effector molecule.

TL;DR: The results suggest that nitric oxide is the precursor of nitrite/nitrate synthesized by cytotoxic activated macrophages and, via formation of iron-nitric oxide complexes and subsequent degradation of Iron-sulfur prosthetic groups, an effector molecule.

The mitochondrial death/life regulator in apoptosis and necrosis

TL;DR: The acquisition of the biochemical and ultrastructural features of apoptosis critically relies on the liberation of apoptogenic proteases or protease activators from mitochondria.

Neuroglial activation and neuroinflammation in the brain of patients with autism

TL;DR: It is indicated that innate neuroimmune reactions play a pathogenic role in an undefined proportion of autistic patients, suggesting that future therapies might involve modifying neuroglial responses in the brain.

Biological effects of the superoxide radical.

TL;DR: Can the superoxide radical exert deleterious effects independent of participating with H2O2 in the production of the hydroxyl radical?
