Abstract
(11) Potassium ferricyanide has previously been used to convert w'c-1,2-dicarboxylate groups to double bonds. See, for example, L. F. Fieser and M. J. Haddadln, J. Am. Chem. Soc., 86, 2392 (1964). The oxidative dldecarboxylation of 1,2-dlcarboxyllc acids is, of course, a well-known process. See Inter alia (a) C. A. Grob, M. Ohta, and A. Weiss, Helv. Chim. Acta, 41, 1911 (1958); and (b) E. N. Cain, R. Vukov, and S. Masamune, J. Chem. Soc. D, 98 (1969).

Aging of proteins: immunological detection of a glucose-derived pyrrole formed during maillard reaction in vivo.

TL;DR: The pathobiological relevance of pyrraline may relate to its reported antiproteolytic and mutagenic properties and may play a role in diabetic neuropathy in analogy to pyrroles formed during hexane-induced neuropathy.

Natural flavonoids and lignans are potent cytostatic agents against human leukemic HL-60 cells

TL;DR: Results showed that some of the naturally occurring flavonoids and lignans inhibited HL-60 cell growth with a non-toxic mechanism, possibly via cessation of DNA, RNA, and/or protein synthesis of the leukemic cells.

An extracellular poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) depolymerase from Alcaligenes faecalis

TL;DR: Analysis of hydrolytic products of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), several oligomeric esters of D(--)-3-Hydroxybutyric acid, and the methyl ester of the trimeric ester indicated that the enzyme hydrolyzed these substrates from the free hydroxyl terminus, releasing D(.--)-3,hydroxy butyrate dimer units one at a time.

Doubly-lipid-modified protein sequence motifs exhibit long-lived anchorage to lipid bilayer membranes.

TL;DR: It is estimated that the rate of spontaneous desorption of the corresponding doubly-anchored proteins from membranes should be much slower than that of regulated, protein-mediated release (effected by binding to an "escort" protein or by de-S-acylation).

Studies on character impact odorants of coffee brews

Abstract: Twenty-two compounds, which had been revealed by dilution experiments as potent odorants, were quantified by stable isotope dilution assays in brews prepared from roasted Arabica (Coffea arabica) and Robusta coffees (Coffea canephora var. Robusta). Calculation of odor activity values (OAVs; ratio of concentration to odor threshold) indicated 2-furfurylthiol, 3-mercapto-3-methylbutyl formate, methanethiol, β-damascenone, methylpropanal, and 3-methylbutanal as the most potent odorants. However, the rankings of the OAVs were different in the two coffee brews. The extraction yields obtained during the preparation of the brews were determined for 17 odorants. Polar compounds (e.g. guaiacol, 4-hydroxy-2,5-dimethyl-3(2H)-furanone, 3-hydroxy-4,5-dimethyl-2(5H)-furanone, 2,3-butanedione) were extracted with higher yields (75−100%); nonpolar compounds (e.g. β-damascenone, 2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine) gave yields of only 10−25%. The overall odor of the models containing the odorants in the concentration levels that...
