Figure 4: Experimental medicine models for earlier assessment of efficacy of novel treatments and combinations Surrogate markers within experimental medicine models can be of use to screen new treatment combinations in small groups of patients or volunteers. This information is used to refine decision making for subsequent application in and design of randomised controlled trials. If insufficient evidence of efficacy is seen in the model, this information can be used to change treatment focus, the dose or duration, or the treatment target. If pre-set criteria are met, the efficacy of the treatment combination can be assessed using randomised trial designs. Approaches with big data can be useful to highlight particularly promising treatments or combinations and provide additional evidence of efficacy from naturalistic data-capture methods.
