Health and environmental impacts of replacing kerosene-based lighting with renewable electricity in East Africa

TLDR
In this article, the authors used comparative risk assessment methods to quantify the ischemic heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and lower respiratory infection-related morbidity and mortality attributable to personal fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure due to kerosene-based lighting for residents of East Africa in 2015.

Techno-Economic Feasibility of Off-Grid Renewable Energy Electrification Schemes: A Case Study of an Informal Settlement in Namibia

TL;DR: In this paper , a comparison between the deployment of solar home systems to each residence and the supplying power from either a centralized roof-mounted or ground-mounted hybrid microgrid is presented, and the results show that a hybrid system comprising a solar photovoltaic, a diesel generator, and batteries offers the lowest net present cost.
Journal ArticleDOI

Assessing flexibility for integrating renewable energies into carbon neutral multi-regional systems: The case of the Chilean power system

TL;DR: In this article , the authors present a methodological framework for designing the long-term transition of a multi-regional energy system towards a low carbon emission system, characterized by a high penetration of non-conventional renewable energy sources (NCRE) and the use of CSP-TES, BESS and electricity transmission settings for providing effective levels of operational flexibility.

Influence of alkali metal Na on coal-based soot production

TL;DR: In this article , the effects of Na on the characteristics of coal-derived soot were investigated, and the structural transformation of soot was thoroughly investigated by DFT calculation method in combination with elemental analysis.

Policy Pathways for Mapping Clean Energy Access for Cooking in the Global South—A Case for Rural Communities

TL;DR: In this article , the authors examined the cooking space of the Global South with a specific focus on the rural communities to map alternative energy sources, technologies and supporting policies to drive clean cooking services for improved socioeconomic development.

Bounding the role of black carbon in the climate system: A scientific assessment

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provided an assessment of black-carbon climate forcing that is comprehensive in its inclusion of all known and relevant processes and that is quantitative in providing best estimates and uncertainties of the main forcing terms: direct solar absorption; influence on liquid, mixed phase, and ice clouds; and deposition on snow and ice.

Global burden of 87 risk factors in 204 countries and territories, 1990–2019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Christopher J L Murray, +2272 more
- 17 Oct 2020 -
TL;DR: The largest declines in risk exposure from 2010 to 2019 were among a set of risks that are strongly linked to social and economic development, including household air pollution; unsafe water, sanitation, and handwashing; and child growth failure.

Global estimates of mortality associated with long-term exposure to outdoor fine particulate matter

Richard T. Burnett, +54 more
TL;DR: PM2.5 exposure may be related to additional causes of death than the five considered by the GBD and that incorporation of risk information from other, nonoutdoor, particle sources leads to underestimation of disease burden, especially at higher concentrations.

Addressing Global Mortality from Ambient PM2.5

TL;DR: This analysis uses high-resolution (10 km, global-coverage) concentration data and cause-specific integrated exposure-response functions developed for the Global Burden of Disease 2010 to assess how regional and global improvements in ambient air quality could reduce attributable mortality from PM2.5.
