Journal ArticleDOI
Endothelium-derived relaxing factor and coronary vasospasm
TL;DR: The endothelium releases the powerful vasodilator and antiaggregatory substance, EDRF, both under basal conditions and upon stimulation by a wide variety of agents, which may have pathophysiologic significance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Impaired Insulin Signaling in Endothelial Cells Reduces Insulin-Induced Glucose Uptake by Skeletal Muscle
Tetsuya Kubota,Naoto Kubota,Hiroki Kumagai,Shinichi Yamaguchi,Hideki Kozono,Takehiro Takahashi,Mariko Inoue,Shinsuke Itoh,Iseki Takamoto,Takayoshi Sasako,Katsuyoshi Kumagai,Tomoko Kawai,Shinji Hashimoto,Tsuneo Kobayashi,Maki Sato,Kumpei Tokuyama,Satoshi Nishimura,Masaki Tsunoda,Tomohiro Ide,Koji Murakami,Tomomi Yamazaki,Osamu Ezaki,Koichi Kawamura,Hirotake Masuda,Masao Moroi,Kaoru Sugi,Yuichi Oike,Hiroaki Shimokawa,Nobuyuki Yanagihara,Masato Tsutsui,Yasuo Terauchi,Kazuyuki Tobe,Ryozo Nagai,Katsuo Kamata,Kenji Inoue,Tatsuhiko Kodama,Kohjiro Ueki,Takashi Kadowaki +37 more
TL;DR: The results show that insulin signaling in endothelial cells plays a pivotal role in the regulation of glucose uptake by skeletal muscle, and improving endothelial insulin signaling may serve as a therapeutic strategy for ameliorating skeletal muscle insulin resistance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Coronary artery spasm induced in atherosclerotic miniature swine
Hiroaki Shimokawa,Hitonobu Tomoike,Shozo Nabeyama,Hideo Yamamoto,Haruo Araki,Motoomi Nakamura,Yutaka Ishii,Kenzo Tanaka +7 more
TL;DR: This model, which suggests that atherosclerotic changes may be one of the primary factors in the occurrence of coronary artery spasm, should facilitate studies on the pathogenesis of this condition.
Journal ArticleDOI
International standardization of diagnostic criteria for vasospastic angina
John F. Beltrame,Filippo Crea,Juan Carlos Kaski,Hisao Ogawa,Peter Ong,Udo Sechtem,Hiroaki Shimokawa,C. Noel Bairey Merz +7 more
TL;DR: The Coronary Vasomotion Disorders International Study Group (COVADIS) was established to develop international standards for the diagnostic criteria of coronary vasomotor disorders, which included the criteria for vasospastic angina.
Journal ArticleDOI
Modulation of the interleukin-6 signalling pathway and incidence rates of atherosclerotic events and all-cause mortality: Analyses from the Canakinumab Anti-Inflammatory Thrombosis Outcomes Study (CANTOS)
Paul M. Ridker,Peter Libby,Jean G. MacFadyen,Tom Thuren,Christie M. Ballantyne,Francisco Antonio Helfenstein Fonseca,Wolfgang Koenig,Hiroaki Shimokawa,Brendan M. Everett,Robert J. Glynn +9 more
TL;DR: CANTOS provides proof of concept evidence in humans that modulation of the IL-6 signalling pathway, at least with canakinumab, associates with reduced cardiovascular event rates, independent of lipid lowering.
