Cyclops syndrome: loss of extension following intra-articular anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

Abstract: Arthrofibrosis is one of the recognized complications following traditional anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. With the advent of arthroscopic assisted ACL reconstructions, the extent of potential arthrofibrosis appeared to be less. However, 13 patients after intra-articular ACL reconstruction using a patella tendon autograft developed a similar symptom complex. In addition to postoperative loss of full extension, there was an audible and palpable clunk with terminal extension. These patients had similar arthroscopic findings of a nodule that formed anterolateral to the tibial tunnel placement of the graft. The arthroscopic appearance of the soft tissue mass with its surface vessels was reminiscent of a "cyclops." After arthroscopy with debridement and manipulation of the knee, extension was improved in all cases. The average range of motion immediately after the procedure was 6.0-130 degrees, compared with 16-103 degrees preoperatively. The range of motion at last follow-up averaged 3.8 degrees of extension and 138 degrees of flexion. All patients had greater than 130 degrees of flexion. There were no complications attributed to the manipulation and arthroscopic lysis of adhesions, and no patient experienced loss of graft integrity or knee stability. The "cyclops" nodule was examined grossly and microscopically and demonstrated peripheral fibrous tissue with a central region of granulation tissue in all specimens. In addition, two specimens were noted to include bony fragments and three specimens contained cartilaginous tissue.

Cognitive impairment in individuals currently using methamphetamine.

Abstract: Although there are increasing reports of methamphetamine use, studies examining the cognitive consequences of methamphetamine have not been performed on a population currently using the drug. To characterize this population, 65 people currently using MA regularly and 65 non-users were given a battery of cognitive tests. The battery included recall, recognition, Digit Symbol, Trail Making A & B, Stroop, Wisconsin Card Sort, backward digit span, and the FAS test of verbal fluency. The methamphetamine users were significantly more impaired on recall tasks, digit symbol, Stroop color words, and Trail Making B, but scores fell within the normal ranges on the other measures.

Abstract: Critical social theory is a multidisciplinary knowledge base with the implicit goal of advancing the emancipatory function of knowledge. It approaches this goal by promoting the role of criticism in the search for quality education. Through critical social theory in education, quality is proportional to the depth of analysis that students have at their disposal. As a critical form of classroom discourse, critical social theory cultivates students’ ability to critique institutional as well as conceptual dilemmas, particularly those that lead to domination or oppression. It also promotes a language of transcendence that complements a language of critique in order to forge alternative and less oppressive social arrangements. A critical social theory-based movement in education highlights the relationship between social systems and people, how they produce each other, and ultimately how critical social theory can contribute to the emancipation of both.
