Abstract: The Defining Issues Test (DIT) of moral judgment is discussed in light of the recent challenge by G. Lind (1995) with the Moral Judgment Test (MJT), which is widely used in Europe. The 2 tests represent alternative methods as well as support different conclusions about moral judgment. The key difference is a stage-consistency (MJT) vs. a stage-preference (DIT) approach. Construct validity is defined in terms of 7 types of studies, and the approaches are compared. The stage-preference approach systematically outperforms the stage-consistency approach. Benchmarking by using classic studies in moral judgment illustrates an empirical, multistudy, quantitative approach to moral judgment research.

Abstract: Snakes possess many extreme morphological and physiological adaptations. Identification of the molecular basis of these traits can provide novel understanding for vertebrate biology and medicine. Here, we study snake biology using the genome sequence of the Burmese python (Python molurus bivittatus), a model of extreme physiological and metabolic adaptation. We compare the python and king cobra genomes along with genomic samples from other snakes and perform transcriptome analysis to gain insights into the extreme phenotypes of the python. We discovered rapid and massive transcriptional responses in multiple organ systems that occur on feeding and coordinate major changes in organ size and function. Intriguingly, the homologs of these genes in humans are associated with metabolism, development, and pathology. We also found that many snake metabolic genes have undergone positive selection, which together with the rapid evolution of mitochondrial proteins, provides evidence for extensive adaptive redesign of snake metabolic pathways. Additional evidence for molecular adaptation and gene family expansions and contractions is associated with major physiological and phenotypic adaptations in snakes; genes involved are related to cell cycle, development, lungs, eyes, heart, intestine, and skeletal structure, including GRB2-associated binding protein 1, SSH, WNT16, and bone morphogenetic protein 7. Finally, changes in repetitive DNA content, guanine-cytosine isochore structure, and nucleotide substitution rates indicate major shifts in the structure and evolution of snake genomes compared with other amniotes. Phenotypic and physiological novelty in snakes seems to be driven by system-wide coordination of protein adaptation, gene expression, and changes in the structure of the genome.

Abstract: Competitive tennis play requires a combination of the major physiological variables; however, the specifics of these variables have yet to be determined appropriately. General strength and flexibility training have been suggested as being beneficial for performance and injury prevention, yet specific guidelines are lacking. This paper provides a review of specific studies that relate to competitive tennis, and highlights the need for tennis-specific training as opposed to generalised physical training. It identifies specific studies that support the premise that tennis has physiological requirements which need to be understood when designing training and research programmes.

Abstract: Obstructive carotid artery disease is responsible for 60% of strokes in the United States and is the third major cause of death. Stent-supported carotid artery angioplasty has the potential to prevent stroke in thousands of patients and offers a number of potential advantages over surgical revascularization (carotid endarterectomy). Results of the prospective observational study at the University of Alabama at Birmingham indicate that carotid stent-supported angioplasty is safe and probably effective in reducing stroke in patients with high-risk cerebrovascular disease. Technical success was achieved in 99% of 146 procedures; 210 stents were placed in 152 vessels, with only 1 instance of stent thrombosis. The rate of major in-hospital complications was unexpectedly low-only 1 death and 2 major strokes. Seven patients suffered minor strokes, but only 2 were left with minor weakness. When compared with a projected complication rate of 6% had these patients undergone carotid endarterectomy, stenting resulted in fewer major events. At 6-month follow-up, 69 of 74 patients were evaluated by angiography or ultrasound, which detected 8 cases of stent deformation and a restenosis rate of < 5%. Because of these instances of stent deformation, use of the Palmaz (biliary) stent was discontinued. Although 1 patient had a transient ischemic attack, no strokes occurred during follow-up. To date, carotid stenting is an investigational procedure. Cardiovascular interventionalists, industry, and the FDA are encouraged to validate this approach through clinical testing. However, improvements in technique, devices, and adjunctive therapies are needed before the method can be tested in randomized trials.
