Abstract: Many biological, ecological, and economic systems are best described by weighted networks, as the nodes interact with each other with varying strength. However, most evolving network models studied so far are binary, the link strength being either 0 or 1. In this paper we introduce and investigate the scaling properties of a class of models which assign weights to the links as the network evolves. The combined numerical and analytical approach indicates that asymptotically the total weight distribution converges to the scaling behavior of the connectivity distribution, but this convergence is hampered by strong logarithmic corrections.

Abstract: The active form of vitamin D (1,25D3) suppressed the development of animal models of human autoimmune diseases including experimental inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The vitamin D receptor (VDR) is required for all known biologic effects of vitamin D. Here we show that VDR deficiency (knockout, KO) resulted in severe inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract in two different experimental models of IBD. In the CD45RB transfer model of IBD, CD4+/CD45RBhigh T cells from VDR KO mice induced more severe colitis than wild-type CD4+/CD45RBhigh T cells. The second model of IBD used was the spontaneous colitis that develops in IL-10 KO mice. VDR/IL-10 double KO mice developed accelerated IBD and 100% mortality by 8 wk of age. At 8 wk of age, all of the VDR and IL-10 single KO mice were healthy. Rectal bleeding was observed in every VDR/IL-10 KO mouse. Abstract: A calculation of electric and magnetic susceptibilities and shielding factors for closed-shell atomic systems based on relativistic Hartree-Fock-Slater (RHFS) electron theory is presented. Numerical results are given for the electric dipole and quadrupole, and for the magnetic dipole and octupole cases for closed-shell atoms and ions from $Z=2$ to $Z=92$. Comparison is made with previous nonrelativistic uncoupled Hartree-Fock calculations and with experiment.

Abstract: Guided by the emotional security hypothesis, this study examined whether links between marital relations and children's adjustment were mediated by children's emotional security, as evidenced by their emotional reactivity (e.g., vigilance, distress), regulation of exposure to parent affect (avoidance, involvement), and internal representations in the context of interparental relations. Multiple methods and contexts were used to assess 6- to 9-year-olds' emotional security in response to standardized, simulated conflicts involving parents. Latent variable path analysis supported a theoretical pathway whereby marital dysfunction was linked with adjustment problems as mediated by response processes indicative of emotional insecurity in relation to parental conflicts. Emotional reactivity and internal representations were most closely linked with marital relations and child adjustment, especially with regard to internalizing symptoms. The importance of understanding children's emotional security in the context of the marital subsystem is discussed.

Abstract: Starting from Shannon's celebrated 1948 channel coding theorem, we trace the evolution of channel coding from Hamming codes to capacity-approaching codes. We focus on the contributions that have led to the most significant improvements in performance versus complexity for practical applications, particularly on the additive white Gaussian noise channel. We discuss algebraic block codes, and why they did not prove to be the way to get to the Shannon limit. We trace the antecedents of today's capacity-approaching codes: convolutional codes, concatenated codes, and other probabilistic coding schemes. Finally, we sketch some of the practical applications of these codes.
