Abstract: This paper presents an experimental demonstration of a basic cell of the quantum-dot cellular automata, a transistorless approach to computation that addresses the issues of device density, interconnection, and power dissipation. The device under study was composed of four metal dots, connected with tunnel junctions and capacitors, and operated at <50 mK. Operation was evidenced by switching of a single electron between output dots controlled by a single electron switching in input dots, demonstrating a nonlinear, bistable response.

Abstract: The theory of attachment as a secure-base relationship integrates insights about affect, cognition, and behavior in close relationships across age and culture. Empirical successes based on this theory include important discoveries about the nature of infant-caregiver and adult-adult close relationships, the importance of early experience, and about stability and change in individual differences. The task now is to preserve these insights and successes and build on them. To accomplish this, we need to continually examine the logic and coherence of attachment theory and redress errors of emphasis and analysis. Views on attachment development, attachment representation, and attachment in family and cross-cultural perspective need to be updated in light of empirical research and advances in developmental theory, behavioral biology, and cognitive psychology. We also need to challenge the theory by formulating and testing hypotheses which, if not confirmed, would require significant changes to the theory. If we can accomplish these tasks, prospects for important developments in attachment theory and research are greater than ever, as are the prospects for integration with other disciplines.

Abstract: Graphene oxide sheets suspended in ethanol interact with excited ZnO nanoparticles and undergo photocatalytic reduction. The luminescence quenching of the green emission of ZnO serves as a probe to monitor the electron transfer from excited ZnO to graphene oxide. Anchoring of ZnO nanoparticles on 2-D carbon nanostructures provides a new way to design semiconductor−carbon nanocomposites for catalytic applications.

Abstract: Low cost, non-dendritic magnesium metal is an ideal anode for a post lithium ion battery. Currently, development of magnesium electrolytes governs the rate of progress in this field, because electrolyte properties determine the class of cathodes utilized. A review of the latest progress in the area of magnesium battery electrolyte and a perspective on mitigating present challenges is presented herein. Firstly, density functional theory has been shown to predict the potential window of magnesium electrolytes on inert electrodes. Secondly, we report initial efforts aimed to overcome the corrosive property of these magnesium organohaloaluminates towards less noble metals such as stainless steel. This is a major challenge in developing high voltage magnesium electrolytes essential for batteries which operate above 3V. We lastly touch on cathode candidates including the insertion and conversion classes. One conversion cathode we pay particular attention to is electrophilic sulfur which can be married with magnesium metal anodes by utilizing non-nucleophilic electrolytes obtained by simple crystallization of in situ generated magnesium organohaloaluminates. Effectively, non-nucleophilic electrolytes open the door to research on magnesium/sulfur batteries.
