The growth of multilayer arrays of coherently strained islands self-organizes into a more regular three-dimensional arrangement, providing a possible route to obtain the size uniformity needed for electronic applications of quantum dot arrays.
Abstract
We investigate the growth of multilayer arrays of coherently strained islands, which may serve as ``quantum dots'' in electronic devices. A simple model reproduces the observed vertical correlation between islands in successive layers. However, the arrangement of islands is not simply repeated from layer to layer. Instead, the island size and spacing grow progressively more uniform. In effect, the structure ``self-organizes'' into a more regular three-dimensional arrangement, providing a possible route to obtain the size uniformity needed for electronic applications of quantum dot arrays.

Spontaneous ordering of self-assembled-Ge island

TL;DR: In this article, it is shown that by a suitable engineering of the deposition process, it is possible to obtain self-organization resulting in well ordered clusters composed of regularly disposed nano-sized islands.

Efficient Exciton Transfer from In 0.35 Ga 0.65 As Template into InAs Quantum Dots Grown on GaAs (311)B Substrates

TL;DR: The In0.35Ga0.65As template has a remarkable effect on the optical properties of the InAs QDs as discussed by the authors, and the existence of the template enhances the photo-absorption and therefore the exciton emission from the QDs due to efficient exciton transfer from the template into the QD.

Chemistry-mediated two-dimensional to three-dimensional transition of In thin films

TL;DR: In this article, a mechanism of chemistry-mediated two-dimensional to three-dimensional (2D-3D) transition during In thin film deposition, and the corresponding evolution of nanoscale islands was reported.

Anisotropic spatial correlation of CdSe/Zn(S)Se quantum dot stacks grown by MBE

TL;DR: In this article, the spatial correlation of five-and ten-fold stacks of CdSe quantum dots separated by Zn(S)Se spacers with different thicknesses was investigated in plan-view and cross-section geometry using transmission electron microscopy and compared with grazing incidence x-ray results.
