Identifying key factors for successful joint venture in China

Abstract: China has become one of the top three nations for attracting foreign investment in the international market since 1990. Hundreds of international corporations are currently competing for business opportunities in China in the form of joint venture or direct investment. Both successful joint ventures and failed investments have been reported. Research, addressing issues of the conflicts between different cultures, traditions, as well as value systems, has appeared recently, but few focuses on identifying the key factors and their managerial implications for foreign investors to successfully enter China’s market. This paper presents an application of analytic hierarchy process (AHP) in such an effort, through a case study of China Motorola. This study shows that for foreign investors, by identifying key success factors and then incorporating those factors into firm’s long‐term business strategies and policies can enhance their business opportunities in China for a long time to come, even under China’s current complex economic and marketing conditions.

Scorecard for academic administration performance on the campus

Abstract: Purpose – To provide a framework for an objective “scorecard” for performance of academic administrators.Design/methodology/approach – Literature reviews show that business organizations, as well as academic institutions, are fundamentally rethinking their strategies and operations because of changing environment and calls for more accountability to government and the public. The balanced scorecard is described as a novel approach to face these challenges.Findings – The balanced scorecard has been shown as an effective tool to evaluate an organization, and its performance. Performance is identified as the linkage between outcomes and the multiple factors affecting those strategic outcomes.Research limitation/implications – While the study provides a general framework for a balanced scorecard to academic institutions, it does not provide an exhaustive list of academic goals and associated measures for evaluation.Practical implications – A very useful guidance to academic administrators in their search for ...

An Examination of the Effect of Customized Reading Modules on Diverse Secondary Students' Reading Comprehension and Motivation.

Abstract: This research sought to add to a body of knowledge that is severely underrepresented in the scientific literature, the effects of technological tools on reading comprehension and reading motivation in diverse secondary students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. The study implemented an independent silent reading (ISR) program across a 5-month semester in an urban public high school and included 145 participants from nine 10th grade literature classes. The control group took part in no ISR, one treatment group participated in weekly ISR read from a textbook, and another treatment group participated in weekly ISR read from a computer module designed to address essential components of reading. Students were measured on global reading comprehension, text-specific reading assessments, and reading motivation. After controlling for initial skill and disposition levels, the results indicated that students from both ISR groups made greater gains than the control group in global reading comprehension, while the computer reading module group outperformed the textbook group and the control on text-specific assignments and increased their reading motivation to a greater degree than those in the other conditions. This research offers much-needed data on secondary students’ reading achievement and disposition and provides evidence that ISR implemented through the use of instructional technology and cognitive tools has broad potential to address development in these areas.

Asian pheretimoid earthworms in North America north of Mexico: An illustrated key to the genera Amynthas, Metaphire, Pithemera, and Polypheretima (Clitellata: Megascolecidae).

Abstract: The invasion of the pheretimoid earthworms in North America, especially the genera Amynthas and Metaphire , has raised increasing concerns among ecologists and land managers, in turn increasing the need for proper identification However, the commonly used keys to this group are more than 30 years old with outdated taxonomic information and are based primarily on internal morphology The requirement of significant amount of taxonomic expertise and dissection, even from the first entry of the key, has prevented broader use of these keys As a result, many publications in the United States have used Amynthas spp to represent the group without identifying the species We present here a new key and diagnoses for the 16 pheretimoid earthworm species recorded in North America north of Mexico, including four genera: Amynthas (10), Metaphire (4), Pithemera (1), and Polypheretima (1) The descriptions were based on published records with modifications following inspection of specimens archived at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC Photos of external and internal characters, including male pores, spermathecal pores, genital markings, spermathecae, prostate glands, and intestinal caeca, are presented to help identification A summary of current knowledge about the ecology and historical context is provided for each species We also highlight the previously overlooked and potentially common and widespread co-occurrence of three species— A agrestis , A tokioensis , and M hilgendorfi —and point out that many recent claims of invasion of A agrestis need to be re-evaluated for potential misidentification
