TL;DR: In this paper, forensic DNA phenotyping (FDP) is used to estimate the externally visible characteristics (EVCs) of the source of human DNA left at a crime scene.
Abstract: Forensic DNA Phenotyping (“FDP”), estimating the externally visible characteristics (“EVCs”) of the source of human DNA left at a crime scene, is evolving from science fiction toward science fact. FDP can already identify a source’s gender with 100% accuracy, and likely hair color, iris color, adult height, and a number of other EVCs with accuracy rates approaching 70%. Patent applications have been filed for approaches to generating 3D likenesses of DNA sources based on the DNA alone. Nonetheless, criminal investigators, particularly in the United States, have been reticent to apply FDP in their casework. The reticence is likely related to a number of perceived and real dilemmas associated with FDP: is FDP racial profiling, should we test unknown and unseen physical conditions, does testing for behavioral characteristics impermissibly violate the source’s privacy, ought testing be permitted for samples from known sources or DNA databases, and should FDP be limited to use in investigations only or is FDP appropriate for use in a criminal court. As this article explains, although those dilemmas are substantive, they are not insurmountable, and can be quite easily managed with appropriate regulation and protocols. As FDP continues to develop, there will be less need for criminal investigators to shy away from FDP. Cold cases, missing persons, and victims in crimes without other evidence will one day soon all be well served by FDP.

TL;DR: In this paper, Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 1 provides a useful study of leadership and temperament, and a comparison and contrast between Hal and Hotspur as a means of warning that rigid moralists should not assume leadership positions.
Abstract: Attention should be given to the temperament, passions, and character integral to good leadership. Accordingly, Shakespeare’s Henry IV, Part 1 provides a useful study of leadership and temperament. The framework of the play places the future Henry V—Prince Hal—between the comic Falstaff, on the one hand, and the ill-tempered Hotspur, on the other. Even more, Shakespeare sets up a comparison and contrast between Hal and Hotspur as a means of warning that rigid moralists should not assume leadership positions. Though frivolous, Prince Hal is to be preferred as a leader precisely because of his flexibility of character and his sense of humor. By contrast, Shakespeare teaches that the Hotspurs of the world are dangerous due to the immoderation and imbalance that characterizes their temperament. Such individuals are prone to see life solely in black and white; the ethical public servant, however, must perceive the chromatic nuances of human nature, social interaction, and ethical challenges that characterize p...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate how to design better awareness and memory of product information using mobile coupon campaigns among those who do not redeem the coupons, and the results show that women remember factual ad claims better than descriptive, like women, and their memory has significant effects on subsequent purchase behavior.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how to design better awareness and memory of product information using mobile coupon campaigns among those who do not redeem the coupons.Design/methodology/approach – The research involves two field experiments with a Mid Western mobile marketing firm where differently designed coupons were sent out to men and women customers of a fast food chain, and non-redeemers filled out a survey revealing how much they remembered. The research also connected their subsequent purchases a week later. The data were analyzed using ANOVAs.Findings – Factual ad claims create better recognition than descriptive ad claims in general, but among older working people when ad is viewed in leisure situations men better remember descriptive appeals, and women factual appeals. Also the memory has no effect on purchase intentions or future purchases. In contrast, among younger students, men remember factual ad claims better than descriptive, like women, and their memory has significant effects on subsequent purchase behavior.Research limitations/implications – Selectivity hypotheses may be applied to design advertising congruity/incongruity based on tasks people are doing in different physical situations. Other limitations include some sampling error (or selectivity) and its difficulties in generalizability across industries.Practical implications – Managers can build awareness using different types of ad claims depending on gender and situation among older working groups, and use factual appeals for younger groups. Among younger groups the memory of coupons can also drive subsequent purchase behavior.Originality/value – The paper uncovers the value of non redeeming customers in m-coupon campaigns, and identifies how to target and design campaigns to best extract that value

TL;DR: In this article, a recent bright outburst from the new X-ray binary transient MAXI J1631-479, observed in January 2019, is reported, which suggests that this system is a black hole candidate.
Abstract: We report on a recent bright outburst from the new X-ray binary transient MAXIJ1631-479, observed in January 2019. In particular, we present the 30-200 keV analysis of spectral transitions observed with INTEGRAL/IBIS during its Galactic Plane monitoring program. In the MAXI and BAT monitoring period, we observed two different spectral transitions between the high/soft and low/hard states. The INTEGRAL spectrum from data taken soon before the second transition, is best described by a Comptonised thermal component with a temperature of kTe ~ 30 keV and a high luminosity value of L2-200 keV ~ 3×1038 erg s-1 (assuming a distance of 8 kpc). During the second transition, the source shows a hard, power-law spectrum. The lack of high energy cut-off indicates that the hard X-ray spectrum from MAXI J1631-479 is due to a non-thermal emission. Inverse Compton scattering of soft X-ray photons from a non-thermal or hybrid thermal/non-thermal electron distribution can explain the observed X-ray spectrum although a contribution to the hard X-ray emission from a jet cannot be determined at this stage. The outburst evolution in the hardness-intensity diagram, the spectral characteristics and the rise and decay times of the outburst are suggesting this system is a black hole candidate.
