TL;DR: It is proposed that Janus cells result from two ecophenotypic responses (reaction norm and polyphenism) of these taxa to one or more environmental factors, and may be model organisms for deciphering the genetic basis of developmental plasticity in diatoms.
Abstract: We observed four Gomphonema taxa with a high abundance of Janus cells, which are cells that have valves of two different morphologies, also termed heterovalvar cells. The specimens were collected from a habitat with periodic drying, alternating with standing water. A high proportion of Gomphonema Janus cells (up to 20% of the frustules for each taxon) were found. Heterovalvy within a frustule is based on stria count, and two types of heterovalvy were observed. Cells produced either coarsely or finely striated valves with discontinuous phenotypic plasticity or highly variable stria density within a frustule along a continuous phenotypic gradient. In our study, we measured stria density in complete frustules and single valves. Other features of the frustules showed no noticeable variation. Variable stria density was found in frustules and single valves, although it is not possible to determine whether the single valves were part of Janus cells or homomorphic frustules. Therefore, our conclusions are based o...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a virtual forward-buying model that allows for forward buying but reduces the channel cost with no major behavioral change on the part of manufacturers and retailers.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a virtual forward‐buying model that allows for forward buying but reduces the channel cost with no major behavioral change on the part of manufacturers and retailers.Design/methodology/approach – Using simulations, the authors compare the proposed virtual forward‐buying model with the traditional forward‐buying and everyday‐low‐price approaches.Findings – The authors find that the proposed model leads to lower overall channel costs that are shared equitably between both the manufacturer and the retailer.Research limitations/implications – No primary or secondary is used, a situation that is usually very difficult to find in this area.Practical implications – The paper presents a new method to improve trade promotion efficiencies that does not require a drastic change of habits for either the manufacturer or the retailer; allows the practice of forward buying to continue; and leads to channel cost reductions for both parties.Originality/value – The paper pr...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors suggest how teachers can approach the Internet conceptually and use it practically as they teach about the American South by finding the southern part of cyberspace and illustrate that regions can and do have a place in a medium often represented as spaceless and devoid of geographic boundaries.
Abstract: This article suggests how teachers can approach the Internet conceptually and use it practically as they teach about the American South. Because of its information, communication, and cultural dimensions, the Internet represents a “place” where students and teachers can appraise the South from multiple, alternative perspectives. The article offers lesson strategies and resources for both on-computer and off-computer classroom settings. By finding the southern part of cyberspace, the authors illustrate that regions can and do have a place in a medium often represented as spaceless and devoid of geographic boundaries.

TL;DR: The authors empirically examined the relationship between the trait of equity sensitivity and employment sector (for-profit, public, and nonprofit) for senior executives and found that benevolents have a propensity to pursue nonprofit positions whereas entitleds are likely to gravitate toward for-profit positions.
Abstract: This article empirically examines the relationship between the trait of equity sensitivity and employment sector (for-profit, public, and nonprofit) for senior executives. By controlling for industry (healthcare), we show a relationship between this trait and employment sector in both a single-state survey and a multistate survey. Findings indicate that benevolents have a propensity to pursue nonprofit positions whereas entitleds are likely to gravitate toward for-profit positions. Implications for job seekers, employers, and academics are provided.

TL;DR: In this article, a multi-wavelength analysis of the young massive cluster VVV CL077 was presented for the first time, which enabled the detection of three X-ray emitting stellar members of the cluster, as well as a possible diffuse Xray component that extends a few arcseconds from the cluster core with an intrinsic flux of (9 ± 3) × 10−14 ǫerg−cm−2 s−1 in the 0.5-10 keV band.
Abstract: Multi-wavelength analysis of the young massive cluster VVV CL077 is presented for the first time. Our Chandra survey of this region enabled the detection of three X-ray emitting stellar members of the cluster, as well as a possible diffuse X-ray component that extends a few arcseconds from the cluster core with an intrinsic flux of (9 ± 3) × 10–14 erg cm–2 s–1 in the 0.5-10 keV band. Infrared spectra we obtained for two of these X-ray point sources show absorption lines typical of the atmospheres of massive O stars. The X-ray spectrum from the visible extent of VVV CL077 i.e., a 15'' radius around the cluster, can be modeled with an absorbed power law with N H = cm–2 and Γ = 2 ± 1. In addition, the X-ray core of VVV CL077 coincides with diffuse emission seen in the infrared band and with a local maximum in the radio continuum map. A possible association with a neighboring H II region would place VVV CL077 at a distance of around 11 kpc, on the far side of the Norma Arm. At this distance, the cluster is 0.8 pc wide with a mass density of (1-4) × 103 M ☉ pc–3.
