Practice and content of sex education among adolescents in a family setting in rural southwest Nigeria.

Abstract: A descriptive cross-sectional study to assess adolescents view of the practice and content of sex education within the family setting in a rural Nigerian community and explore whether there is any association between parental communication on sex and adolescents sexual debut and habits. Simple random sampling was utilized while a semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 350 respondents. Data analysis was by the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 11). Majority of the respondents (48.8%) were late adolescents 291 (85.1%) had had sex education most (45.7%) of whom were exposed between ages 10 and 14 years. The main content of parental sex education was HIV/AIDS prevention (51.9%) avoidance of pregnancy (40.9%) abstinence (38.1%) and basic information about reproduction and biology (35.4%). Poor attitude to parental communication on sex was associated with a higher likelihood of pre-marital sex (p = 0.001). Curiosity was the most common major reason for sexual debut. This emphasizes the importance of early sex education within the family setting and its possible impact in delaying sexual initiation. Promotion of parent-child communication about sexual issues is vital in order to improve the reproductive health of the adolescents in this environment. Community-based health education intervention programs for parents are recommended.

The development of manufacturing safety programme simulator

Abstract: Purpose – The manufacturing industry perceives government standards as an attempt to unnecessarily increase production cost. This may be due to lack of acceptable models for demonstrating the associated benefits to industry. It was the goal of this study to develop a simulation model for predicting the performance of a manufacturing safety programme (SP).Design/methodology/approach – The principles of system‐dynamics were applied to identify the relevant safety‐related components and their relationships. A simulation model for evaluating periodic performance of a manufacturing SP was then developed. A set a dynamic equations for predicting factory accidents or preventions and the monetary saving were the performance measures. Two set of factory data: non‐SP (1979) and SP (1991‐2004) were collected from a bottling company. Technical and Scale Efficiency of Commercial Banks in Nigeria

Abstract: This study uses a multistage Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to estimate the productive efficiency of commercial banks in Nigeria. Thirteen banks with detailed information required were selected for the purpose. Three types of efficiencies were estimated and it was found that about 25% of the banks were inefficient due to excessive use of some of the inputs despite mergers and acquisitions. It was further discovered that environmental variables, like intermediation ratio and market power, positively affect the productive efficiency of the banks.

Urban environmental sustainability: a challenge to effective landscaping in nigeria

Abstract: The poor quality of the Nigerian urban environment has been attributed partly to the inadequate%2C misuse and mis- management of the urban open spaces. This%2C according to various researchers%2C has exerted a major strain on the physical outlook of the environment and a negative effect on the welfare and productivity of the residents. This has called for the need to identify and analyze the open spaces in the urban environment and assess the implications of their landscape planning on the status of the city and the development of a healthy and sustainable environment. This study therefore discusses the concept of sustainability%2C particularly within the built environment. It looks into the principles and indicators for sustainability of the environment and the resulting problems. Furthermore%2C a case study of Akure urban core was carried out to assess the uses and landscape status of the open spaces. The results when statistically analysed showed the inadequacies in the provision and management of the open spaces in the study area.
