TL;DR: In this article, a model that describes the true system well can significantly reduce the cost of performing tests on complicated systems and this is especially true for testing of a high-complexity system.

01 Jan 2016TL;DR: The composition and validation of the so-called visual cue list for tower control, and the conclusion that state-of-the-art media are just able to provide the required image resolution for visual detection but not for recognition.
Abstract: Remote control of airports implies application of cameras to replace direct visual observation from airport control towers by projection of the airport and its traffic in a remote control centre. Surprisingly, hardly any literature can be found to list the required visual objects and phenomena for tower control, i.e. the visual cues that need to be seen for tower control. The composition and validation of the so-called visual cue list for tower control is the subject of this study. Tower controller task analysis was used to compose a ‘long-list’ of visual features. The long-list has been presented to a group of operational air traffic controllers to test the need and the circumstances to observe these visual cues. Our analysis shows that most of the visual cues are useful for operational tower control but are not strictly mandatory for applying the rules of the International Civil Aviation Organisation. The requirement for visual image resolution of remote tower control is the second subject of the paper. Our analysis leads to definition of a ‘shortlist’ of important safety-related visual objects and phenomena for tower control and the conclusion that state-of-the-art media are just able to provide the required image resolution for visual detection but not for recognition.

25 Feb 1998TL;DR: In this paper, a system for securement of a mesh screen on the protruding, threaded end of a rock bolt inserted into a rock face comprising a push-on gripper plate, having a generally planar base portion adapted to overlie the mesh screen, and an installation tool.
Abstract: A system for securement of a mesh screen on the protruding, threaded end of a rock bolt inserted into a rock face comprising a push-on gripper plate, having a generally planar base portion adapted to overlie the mesh screen, and an installation tool. The gripper plate has a magnetically grippable contact surface for operative engagement with the installation tool. The installation tool has a handle portion with a main body portion rigidly attached thereto. The main body portion has a magnet to magnetically engage the magnetically grippable contact surface of the gripper plate, and a cavity dimensioned and adapted to non-frictionally receive the protruding, threaded end of the rock bolt during installation of the gripper plate. A ram is rigidly attached to the opposite other end of the handle portion of the installation tool. A method of installing a gripper plate onto the protruding, threaded end of a rock bolt is also provided.

TL;DR: A new mechanical neck was developed for a new dummy possessing a complete articulated spine, for low speed rear-end collisions, that was validated against volunteer tests and was in agreement with the volunteer data.
Abstract: A new mechanical neck was developed for a new dummy possessing a complete articulated spine, for low speed rear-end collisions. The new neck consists of seven cervical elements connected by hinge joints. The neck stiffness properties were created by rubber blocks between each pair of vertebrae in combination with simulated muscle elements between the head and T1. The neck was validated against volunteer tests (Δv of 7 km/h) results. Both displacement and acceleration of the head relative to the upper torso for both duration and peak values, were in agreement with the volunteer data.

14 Apr 2014TL;DR: In this article, the first estimate of the information related to the pitch and/or roll angle was obtained by using a camera mounted on the airborne vehicle and a digital elevation model.
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a method (200) for estimating information related to a vehicle pitch and/or roll angle. The method comprises a step of obtaining (220) a first estimate of the information related to the pitch and/or roll angle. The method is characterized by the steps of capturing (210) an image of an area covering at least a part of the horizon using a camera mounted on the airborne vehicle, and determining (240) an improved estimate of the information related to the pitch and/or roll angle based on the first estimate of the information related to the pitch and/or roll angle, and a digital elevation model.
