TL;DR: The oxygen K x-ray-absorption near-edge structure of alkaline-earth-metal and 3d-transition-metal oxides has been measured by means of the photoelectric yield method and the short-range order multiple scattering calculations for O K-edge spectra of CaO and TiO have been performed.
Abstract: The oxygen K x-ray-absorption near-edge structure of alkaline-earth-metal and 3d-transition-metal oxides has been measured by means of the photoelectric yield method. The short-range order multiple scattering calculations for O K-edge spectra of CaO and TiO have also been performed. From comparison of the observed spectra with the calculated results, the effective cation charge is estimated with q=0.7 for CaO. In the case of 3d-transition-metal oxides, the calculated results are sensitive not only to the cation charge but also to the 3d electron number (d). For TiO, the effective cation charge and the number of 3d electrons are estimated with q=0.7--0.8 and d=1.8--2.0. .AE

TL;DR: In this article, a new scheme for lensed fibers with a long working distance was proposed for alignment-free coupling between arrayed laser diodes and an array of single-mode fibers.
Abstract: A new scheme is proposed for lensed fibers with a long working distance, as used in the coupling between laser diodes and single-mode fibers. The scheme consists of the combination of a hemispherically-ended coreless-fiber tip and an expanded-core fiber. The working distance is measured as 169 /spl mu/m with a relatively low coupling-loss of 4.2 dB at a wavelength of 1.49 /spl mu/m. Tolerances for a 1-dB loss increment for axial-, lateral-, and angular-misalignment are 35, 2.6 /spl mu/m, and 0.8 degrees, respectively. The new configuration is suitable for alignment-free coupling between arrayed laser diodes and an array of single-mode fibers. >

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that Clock mutation disrupts daily maternal behavior and the growth and survival rate of pups, especially with the breeding of more than 10 pups.
Abstract: To understand the role of the circadian molecular clock in mouse reproduction, we investigated the daily rhythms associated with nursing and pup growth in Clock-mutant mice maintained under light-dark housing conditions. The daily rhythm associated with the maternal behavior of crouching had a strong diurnal peak and two weak nocturnal peaks in wild-type dams, whereas homozygotes (Clock/Clock) exhibited no significant peaks in activity. Wild-type, but not Clock-mutant, dams showed high, rhythmic levels of prolactin content in serum that corresponded with crouching. Pup body weight increased at a significantly slower rate in Clock-mutant dams compared with wild-type dams under all experimental conditions when the pups ranged from 10-15 in number. Heterozygote dams equally bred wild-type, heterozygote, or homozygote pups. The amount of milk secreted from dams, as calculated by the increase in pup body weight through suckling, was lower in Clock-mutant mothers vs. wild-type mice. When Clock-mutant dams gave birth to more than 10 pups, survival was poor for offspring until the time of weaning. The present results demonstrate that Clock mutation disrupts daily maternal behavior and the growth and survival rate of pups, especially with the breeding of more than 10 pups.
