Abstract: In this article, an Improved Grey Wolf Optimizer (I-GWO) is proposed for solving global optimization and engineering design problems. This improvement is proposed to alleviate the lack of population diversity, the imbalance between the exploitation and exploration, and premature convergence of the GWO algorithm. The I-GWO algorithm benefits from a new movement strategy named dimension learning-based hunting (DLH) search strategy inherited from the individual hunting behavior of wolves in nature. DLH uses a different approach to construct a neighborhood for each wolf in which the neighboring information can be shared between wolves. This dimension learning used in the DLH search strategy enhances the balance between local and global search and maintains diversity. The performance of the proposed I-GWO algorithm is evaluated on the CEC 2018 benchmark suite and four engineering problems. In all experiments, I-GWO is compared with six other state-of-the-art metaheuristics. The results are also analyzed by Friedman and MAE statistical tests. The experimental results and statistical tests demonstrate that the I-GWO algorithm is very competitive and often superior compared to the algorithms used in the experiments. The results of the proposed algorithm on the engineering design problems demonstrate its efficiency and applicability.

Abstract: We report the first year's on-orbit performance results for the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), a NASA Small Explorer that is performing a survey of the sky in two ultraviolet bands. The instrument comprises a 50 cm diameter modified Ritchey-Chretien telescope with a 125 field of view, selectable imaging and objective-grism spectroscopic modes, and an innovative optical system with a thin-film multilayer dichroic beam splitter that enables simultaneous imaging by a pair of photon-counting, microchannel-plate, delay-line readout detectors. Initial measurements demonstrate that GALEX is performing well, meeting its requirements for resolution, efficiency, astrometry, bandpass definition, and survey sensitivity.

Abstract: Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is a potent mitogenic and migratory factor that regulates the tyrosine phosphorylation of a variety of signalling proteins via intracellular production of H2O2 (refs 1, 2-3). Mammalian 2-Cys peroxiredoxin type II (Prx II; gene symbol Prdx2) is a cellular peroxidase that eliminates endogenous H2O2 produced in response to growth factors such as PDGF and epidermal growth factor; however, its involvement in growth factor signalling is largely unknown. Here we show that Prx II is a negative regulator of PDGF signalling. Prx II deficiency results in increased production of H2O2, enhanced activation of PDGF receptor (PDGFR) and phospholipase Cgamma1, and subsequently increased cell proliferation and migration in response to PDGF. These responses are suppressed by expression of wild-type Prx II, but not an inactive mutant. Notably, Prx II is recruited to PDGFR upon PDGF stimulation, and suppresses protein tyrosine phosphatase inactivation. Prx II also leads to the suppression of PDGFR activation in primary culture and a murine restenosis model, including PDGF-dependent neointimal thickening of vascular smooth muscle cells. These results demonstrate a localized role for endogenous H2O2 in PDGF signalling, and indicate a biological function of Prx II in cardiovascular disease.

Abstract: Amplification of the northern hemisphere seasonal cycle of insolation during the mid-Holocene causes a northward shift of the main regions of monsoon precipitation over Africa and India in all 18 simulations conducted for the Paleoclimate Modeling Intercomparison Project (PMIP). Differences among simulations are related to differences in model formulation. Despite qualitative agreement with paleoecological estimates of biome shifts, the magnitude of the monsoon increases over northern Africa are underestimated by all the models.
