Biologic and pharmacologic regulation of mammalian glutathione synthesis.

Owen W. Griffith

- Vol. 27, Iss: 9, pp 922-935
TLDR
Because GSH plays a critical role in cellular defenses against electrophiles, oxidative stress and nitrosating species, pharmacologic manipulation of GSH synthesis has received much attention.

Inhibition of Glutathione Synthesis via Decreased Glucose Metabolism in Stored RBCs.

TL;DR: Oxidant stress-induced dysfunction in glucose metabolism was the driving force for decreased GSH synthesis during storage, and an underlying molecular mechanism that oxidant stress induced glucose metabolism dysfunction contribute to decreased G SH synthesis in stored RBCs is reflected.
Journal ArticleDOI

Searching for synergism: effects of combinations of phenolic compounds and other toxins on oxidative stress in Lymantria dispar caterpillars

TL;DR: The results of this study do not support the hypothesis that the combined effects of phenolic compounds and other toxins in sugar maple leaves produce a synergistic increase in oxidative stress in L. dispar larvae.

Control of amino acid transport into Chinese hamster ovary cells

TL;DR: This study comparatively characterized AAT expression in untransfected and monoclonal antibody‐producing CHO cells using transcriptome analysis by RNA‐seq, and mechanistically dissected AAT function using a variety of transporter‐specific chemical inhibitors, comparing their effect on cell proliferation, recombinant protein production, and amino acid transport.

Sublethal health effects in laboratory rodents from environmentally relevant exposures to oil sands contaminants

TL;DR: It is proposed that wild small mammals will prove to be valuable sentinel species reflecting sublethal health effects from oil sands-related contaminants and provide reliable and sensitive measures of the response to contaminant exposure in a mammalian model, suggesting associated physiological costs.

Nutritional influence on oxidative stress in global ischemia

TL;DR: Findings from these two studies suggest well-nourished but not nutritionally-deficient rodents tolerate a mild brain insult, and the effect of PEM on brain oxidative stress, neural damage and behaviour after global ischemia in adult male gerbils.

Antioxidant and Redox Regulation of Gene Transcription

TL;DR: The efficacy of different antioxidants to favorably influence the molecular mechanisms implicated in human disease should be a critical determinant of its selection for clinical studies.

Efficacy of oral N-acetylcysteine in the treatment of acetaminophen overdose. Analysis of the national multicenter study (1976 to 1985)

TL;DR: It is concluded that N-acetylcysteine treatment should be started within eight hours of an acetaminophen overdose, but that treatment is still indicated at least as late as 24 hours after ingestion, and it may be superior when treatment is delayed.
