- Vol. 27, Iss: 9, pp 922-935
TLDR
Because GSH plays a critical role in cellular defenses against electrophiles, oxidative stress and nitrosating species, pharmacologic manipulation of GSH synthesis has received much attention.

Role of selenium toxicity and oxidative stress in aquatic birds

TL;DR: It is concluded that Se-related manifestations of oxidative stress may serve as useful bioindicators of Se exposure and toxicity in wild aquatic birds.

Mitochondrial Energy Metabolism and Redox Signaling in Brain Aging and Neurodegeneration

TL;DR: This review focuses on a coordinated metabolic network-cytosolic signaling, transcriptional regulation, and mitochondrial function-that controls the cellular energy levels and redox status as well as factors which impair this metabolic network during brain aging and neurodegeneration.

Analytical methods to investigate glutathione and related compounds in biological and pathological processes

TL;DR: Since GSH, GSSG, and related compounds lack of strong chromophores or fluorophores, it is advantageous, in many assays, to derivatize the compounds in order to improve the detection limit with UV-Vis and to allow fluorescence, thus the most commonly used labeling agents are described.
Journal ArticleDOI

The role of oxidative stress in the ochratoxin A-mediated toxicity in proximal tubular cells.

TL;DR: Investigating the OTA-mediated oxidative stress response concluded that oxidative stress contributes to the tubular toxicity of OTA, and cellular GSH levels play a pivotal role in limiting the short-term toxicity of this mycotoxin in renal tubular cells.

Regulation of gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase subunit gene expression: insights into transcriptional control of antioxidant defenses.

TL;DR: This review summarizes recent progress in defining the molecular mechanisms operative in transcriptional control of the genes encoding the two GCS subunits, identifying areas of agreement and controversy.

Efficacy of oral N-acetylcysteine in the treatment of acetaminophen overdose. Analysis of the national multicenter study (1976 to 1985)

TL;DR: It is concluded that N-acetylcysteine treatment should be started within eight hours of an acetaminophen overdose, but that treatment is still indicated at least as late as 24 hours after ingestion, and it may be superior when treatment is delayed.
