Biologic and pharmacologic regulation of mammalian glutathione synthesis.

Owen W. Griffith

- Vol. 27, Iss: 9, pp 922-935
TLDR
Because GSH plays a critical role in cellular defenses against electrophiles, oxidative stress and nitrosating species, pharmacologic manipulation of GSH synthesis has received much attention.

Allicin ameliorates doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity in rats via suppression of oxidative stress, inflammation and apoptosis

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that allicin effectively mitigates cardiac oxidative damage, apoptosis and inflammation, induced by acute DOX intoxication, and could be a promising cytoprotective agent against DOX cardiotoxicity.
Journal ArticleDOI

Multidomain Flavin-Dependent Sulfhydryl Oxidases

TL;DR: The structure and mechanism of QSOX proteins is compared to their smaller stand-alone cousins: yeast ERV1p and ERV2p, the mammalian augmenter of liver regeneration (ALR), and the viral ALR homologs.
Journal ArticleDOI

Potential therapeutic uses for S-nitrosothiols.

G. Richardson, +1 more
- 01 Jan 2002 -
TL;DR: Although RSNOs have many theoretically useful properties, there are also many aspects of their biochemistry that need to be addressed before their therapeutic potential can be fully realized.
Journal ArticleDOI

Protective role of puerarin on lead-induced alterations of the hepatic glutathione antioxidant system and hyperlipidemia in rats.

TL;DR: Results suggest that puerarin could protect the lead-induced liver injury and hyperlipidemia by reducing ROS production, renewing the activities of antioxidant enzymes and influencing expression of hepatic lipid biosynthesis and metabolism genes.
Journal ArticleDOI

Antioxidant imbalance in the lungs of cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator protein mutant mice.

TL;DR: The hypothesis that a mutation in the CFTR gene can affect the antioxidant defenses in the lung and may contribute to the exaggerated inflammatory response observed in CF is supported.

Antioxidant and Redox Regulation of Gene Transcription

TL;DR: The efficacy of different antioxidants to favorably influence the molecular mechanisms implicated in human disease should be a critical determinant of its selection for clinical studies.

Efficacy of oral N-acetylcysteine in the treatment of acetaminophen overdose. Analysis of the national multicenter study (1976 to 1985)

TL;DR: It is concluded that N-acetylcysteine treatment should be started within eight hours of an acetaminophen overdose, but that treatment is still indicated at least as late as 24 hours after ingestion, and it may be superior when treatment is delayed.
