NIH Image to ImageJ: 25 years of image analysis

TLDR
The origins, challenges and solutions of NIH Image and ImageJ software are discussed, and how their history can serve to advise and inform other software projects.
Abstract
For the past 25 years NIH Image and ImageJ software have been pioneers as open tools for the analysis of scientific images. We discuss the origins, challenges and solutions of these two programs, and how their history can serve to advise and inform other software projects.

Alpha-Ketoglutarate, an Endogenous Metabolite, Extends Lifespan and Compresses Morbidity in Aging Mice.

TL;DR: It is found that CaAKG promotes a longer, healthier life associated with a decrease in levels of systemic inflammatory cytokines, and it is proposed that induction of IL-10 by dietary AKG suppresses chronic inflammation, leading to health benefits.
Journal ArticleDOI

Bioluminescent sensor proteins for point-of-care therapeutic drug monitoring

TL;DR: Semisynthetic bioluminescent sensors are developed that permit precise measurements of drug concentrations in patient samples by spotting minimal volumes on paper and recording the signal using a simple point-and-shoot camera.
Journal ArticleDOI

Heat flux across an open pore enables the continuous replication and selection of oligonucleotides towards increasing length

TL;DR: It is shown that a heat flux across an open pore in submerged rock concentrates replicating oligonucleotides from a constant feeding flow and selects for longer strands, which inverts the above dilemma of the survival of the shortest.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effect of starch filler on calcium-alginate hydrogels loaded with yerba mate antioxidants.

TL;DR: A liquid extract of yerba mate, with antioxidant properties was encapsulated in calcium-alginate hydrogels containing corn starch as filler at different concentrations to improve encapsulation efficiency and release profile of polyphenols in acidic medium.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mating advantage for rare males in wild guppy populations

TL;DR: Experimental manipulations of natural populations are used to show that males with rare colour patterns have higher reproductive fitness, demonstrating NFDS mediated by sexual selection, and support the hypothesis that NFDS maintains diversity in the colour patterns of male guppies through two selective agents, mates and predators.

Fiji: an open-source platform for biological-image analysis

TL;DR: Fiji is a distribution of the popular open-source software ImageJ focused on biological-image analysis that facilitates the transformation of new algorithms into ImageJ plugins that can be shared with end users through an integrated update system.
Journal ArticleDOI

CellProfiler: image analysis software for identifying and quantifying cell phenotypes

TL;DR: The first free, open-source system designed for flexible, high-throughput cell image analysis, CellProfiler is described, which can address a variety of biological questions quantitatively.

ImageJ for microscopy

TL;DR: The near-comprehensive range of import filters that allow easy access to image and meta-data, a broad suite processing and analysis routine, and enthusiastic support from a friendly mailing list are invaluable for all microscopy labs and facilities-not just those on a budget.
Journal ArticleDOI

Computer control of microscopes using µManager.

TL;DR: This unit provides step‐by‐step protocols describing how to get started working with µManager, as well as some starting points for advanced use of the software.
Journal ArticleDOI

Icy: an open bioimage informatics platform for extended reproducible research

TL;DR: Icy is a collaborative bioimage informatics platform that combines a community website for contributing and sharing tools and material, and software with a high-end visual programming framework for seamless development of sophisticated imaging workflows.
