NIH Image to ImageJ: 25 years of image analysis

TLDR
The origins, challenges and solutions of NIH Image and ImageJ software are discussed, and how their history can serve to advise and inform other software projects.
Abstract
For the past 25 years NIH Image and ImageJ software have been pioneers as open tools for the analysis of scientific images. We discuss the origins, challenges and solutions of these two programs, and how their history can serve to advise and inform other software projects.

Whole-central nervous system functional imaging in larval Drosophila

TL;DR: By mapping network activity during fictive behaviours and quantitatively comparing high-resolution whole-CNS activity maps across individuals, this work predicts functional connections between CNS regions and reveals neurons in the brain that identify type and temporal state of motor programs executed in the ventral nerve cord.

Single-Cell Analysis of the Muscle Stem Cell Hierarchy Identifies Heterotypic Communication Signals Involved in Skeletal Muscle Regeneration

TL;DR: This study analyzes muscle regeneration in mice using single-cell RNA sequencing and shows that myogenic stem/progenitor cells exhibit heterogeneous expression of multiple Syndecan proteins in cycling myogenic cells, suggesting that Syndecans may coordinate myogenic fate regulation.
Journal ArticleDOI

The burden of rare diseases.

TL;DR: This work reviews the existing literature on rare disease numbers, in an attempt to demystify the subject and summarize data pertaining to known number and cumulative prevalence of rare diseases, mortality, and orphan drug numbers.
Journal ArticleDOI

SIMA: Python software for analysis of dynamic fluorescence imaging data.

TL;DR: SIMA, an open source Python package that facilitates common analysis tasks related to fluorescence imaging, and a graphical user interface (GUI) for manual editing of the automatically segmented ROIs and automated registration of ROIs across multiple imaging datasets.
