Abstract: A method and system for coding an image using context-based adaptive VLC where transform coefficients are partitioned into blocks having a block dimension of 4nx4m (with n, m being positive integer equal to or greater than 1). Each block is scanned in a zigzag manner to produce an ordered vector of coefficients having a length of 16nxm. The ordered vector is sub-sampled in an interleaved manner to produce nxm sub-sampled sequences of transform coefficients prior to encoding the transform coefficients using an entropy encoder.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for providing delivery confirmations of message deliveries made in a telephone network (10). The method comprises the following steps: (a) a subscriber A provides a message addressed to a subscriber B, which message is temporarily stored in a storage device (14) located in the network, (b) an attempt is made for delivering the stored message to subscriber B, and (c) after the delivery attempts, subscriber A is delivered a confirmation of the result of the message delivery. In order that the confirmations can be provided as simply as possible from the subscriber's point of view, and causing a minimum load to the network, the network maintains subscriber-specific information on whether the subscriber has such a message delivery service available that allows delivery of subscriber-specific messages, whereby upon delivering a confirmation, it is possible to route a confirmation addressed to subscriber A to the message delivery service (15) on the basis of the information, if need be.

Abstract: A digital mobile communication system is provided with a facility by means of which it can establish a connection to the Internet network (12) via an Internet access point (14, 15). IAP settings needed for establishing a connection are stored in a mobile station (MS). When a mobile station (MS) roams, the closest point may, however, change, and IAP settings should be updated in the mobile station (MS). The invention comprises dividing the mobile communication system into IAP areas, which are given preferred IAPs. An IAP area may be e.g. a mobile communication network (11, 17). Mobile communication networks broadcast system information on the basis of which a mobile station may detect that the IAP area has changed and start a procedure for updating IAP settings. Updating may comprise retrieval of IAP settings from a special server (13) in the network maintained by an Internet service provider. Retrieval can be done e.g. via a short message service center (10). In one embodiment the mobile communication network broadcasts messages giving recommended IAP settings to mobile stations.

Abstract: An apparatus and method is provided for facilitating the seamless handoff of IP connections between access routers in an IP network. The mobile IP network includes two or more access routers each serving a different geographic service area. When a mobile terminal moves from the first service area to the second service area, the mobile terminal transmits to the second access router the IP address of the previous access router. The second access router uses this information to learn capabilities of the first access router (e.g., bandwidths supported, security schemes, and the like) for use in future handoff decisions, and exchanges capability information with the first access router. The assumption is made based on the exchanged information that the access routers are geographically proximate. When another mobile terminal transitions from one service area to another, the system selects an optimal target access router based on the previously learned information, including the inferred geographic proximity between access routers.

Abstract: In this paper, we identify mobile social networks as an important new direction of research in mobile computing, and show how an expanded definition of mobile social networks that includes sensor networks can enable exciting new context-aware applications, such as context-aware video screens, music jukeboxes, and mobile health applications. We offer SocialFusion as a system capable of systematically integrating such diverse mobile, social, and sensing input streams and effectuating the appropriate context-aware output action. We explain some of the major challenges that SocialFusion must overcome. We describe some preliminary results that we have obtained in implementing the SocialFusion vision.
