09 Jun 2000TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a communication system consisting of an information source (20), a position transceiver (14), disposed at a broadcast location (16), coupled to the information source, and a database (26), communicating with the network, storing information which is transmitted to the second transceiver associated with the identification information.
Abstract: The invention is a communication system (10) and a method of communication. The communication system includes an information source (20); a position transceiver (14) disposed at a broadcast location (16) and coupled to the information source, the position transceiver broadcasting information from the information source within a broadcast area (18) where the position transceiver is located, the information including identification information relating to the information source; a mobile terminal (12) within the broadcast area comprising first and second transceivers (44 and 46), the first transceiver communicating with the position transceiver; a network (42) communicating with the second transceiver; and a database (26), communicating with the network, storing information which is transmitted to the second transceiver associated with the identification information in response to the database receiving at least the identification information by transmission of the network from the mobile terminal to the database.

28 Dec 2006TL;DR: In this article, a diffractive beam expander (50) comprises an input grating, a crossed grating and an output grating implemented on a planar transparent substrate (7 ).
Abstract: A diffractive beam expander ( 50 ) comprises an input grating ( 10 ), a crossed grating ( 20 ), and an output grating ( 30 ) implemented on a planar transparent substrate ( 7 ). The crossed grating ( 20 ) comprises a plurality of diffractive features ( 23 ) arranged along the lines of a first set of parallel lines ( 25 ) and along the lines of a second set of parallel lines ( 26 ) such that the lines ( 25 ) of the first set are parallel to the lines ( 26 ) of the second set. The lines of the first set have a first grating period and the lines of the second set have a second grating period. A light beam (B 1 ) coupled into the substrate ( 7 ) by the input grating ( 10 ) impinges on the crossed grating ( 20 ) at a first location (EC 1 ) and further locations (EC 2 ). Interaction at the first location (EC 1 ) provides several sub-beams (S 00 , S 01 , S 10 ) which propagate in different directions. Further interactions at second locations (EC 2 ) provide further sub-beams (V 01 , U 10 ) which propagate in the same direction as the original in-coupled light (B 1 ). Light is subsequently coupled out of the substrate ( 7 ) by the output grating ( 30 ) to provide a light beam (B 2 ) which is expanded in two directions (SX, SZ) with respect to the beam (B 0 ) impinging on the input grating. A virtual display device ( 200 ) may comprise said diffractive beam expander ( 50 ).

06 Oct 2003TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a method to operate a mobile terminal having a memory storing application software and data that is descriptive of the use of the mobile terminal, and that further has a display and a controller coupled to the memory.
Abstract: A mobile terminal includes a memory storing application software and data that is descriptive of the use of the mobile terminal, a display and a controller that is coupled to the memory. The controller is responsive to the application software and to at least a sub-set of the stored data for visualizing on the display, in a graphical form, the use of the mobile station over a period of time. The controller preferably constructs a temporally-based visualization of the use of the mobile station, such as a timeline visualization of the use of the mobile station. The controller may further be responsive to the application software and to at least the sub-set of the stored data for automatically deriving a content of a user's web log (blog). A method is also disclosed to operate a mobile terminal having a memory storing application software and data that is descriptive of the use of the mobile terminal, and that further has a display and a controller coupled to the memory. The method includes selecting at least a portion of the data and constructing a blog that is indicative of the use of the mobile station over a period of time, as indicated by the selected portion of the data. The blog may include an animation that is indicative of the use of the mobile station over the period of time, and may also include textual data that is automatically generated in accordance with the use of the mobile station over the period of time.

10 Apr 2010TL;DR: Family Story Play is introduced, a system that supports grandparents to read books together with their grandchildren over the Internet to improve communication across generations and over a distance and to support parents and grandparents in fostering the literacy development of young children.
Abstract: We introduce Family Story Play, a system that supports grandparents to read books together with their grandchildren over the Internet. Family Story Play is designed to improve communication across generations and over a distance, and to support parents and grandparents in fostering the literacy development of young children. The interface encourages active child participation in the book reading experience by combining a paper book, a sensor-enhanced frame, video conferencing technology, and video content of a Sesame Street Muppet (Elmo). Results with users indicate that Family Story Play improves child engagement in long-distance communication and increases the quality of interaction between young children and distant grandparents. Additionally, Family Story Play encourages dialogic reading styles that are linked with literacy development. Ultimately, reading with Family Story Play becomes a creative shared activity that suggests a new kind of collaborative story telling.

15 May 2000TL;DR: In this article, a simple method is derived for estimating the downlink capacity and required base station transmission power in a WCDMA system based on a downlink pole equation which is mostly similar with the well known CDMA uplink pole equation.
Abstract: A simple method is derived for estimating the downlink capacity and required base station transmission power in a WCDMA system. This is based on a downlink pole equation which is mostly similar with the well known CDMA uplink pole equation. It is shown that the total downlink transmission power is composed of two terms. The first term is equal to what would be needed in the absence of interference and the second one shows the increase due to multiple access interference which is inversely proportional to 1-/spl eta//sub DL/ where /spl eta//sub DL/ is called the downlink loading. The method can be used in radio network dimensioning where extensive simulations can not be run. Usage of the method is demonstrated by some examples.
