Abstract: In order to compound a new drug comblnatlon agalnst canlne otitis externa (OE), 515 dogs affected wlth OE were subjected to physical examlnatlon and mlcroblologlcal analysis of their ear exudates. OE was erythematous-cerumlnous In 83 per cent and suppurative In 17 per cent of the patlent material. Erythematous-cerumlnous lnflammatlons were characterlsed by severe prurltus and accumulatlon of brownlsh, greasy cerumen In the audltory canal. The yeast Malassezla jmchydermat/s was Isolated from the ears of 76 per cent of the dogs, often In comblnatlon wlth Staphylococcus lntermedlus bacterla. M pachydermatls showed the most sensltlvlty, In decreasing order of efflcacy, to ketoconazole, econazole, clotrlmazole, mlconazole and nystatln. S lntermedlus Isolates were most sensltlve to amoxyclllln-clavulanlc acld, enrofloxacln, cephalexln and gentamlcln. The mlcroorganlsm most frequently Isolatcbd from dogs wlth suppurative OE was Pseudomonas aewglnosa; In some cases Proteus, Streptococcus and Pasteurella were also Isolated. The P aeruglnosa Isolates showed the highest sensltlvlty to gentamlcln, polymyxln B and tobramycln.

Abstract: Summary Blood samples of 561 Lipizzan horses from subpopulations (studs) of seven European countries representing a large fraction of the breed’s population were used to examine the genetic diversity, population subdivision and gene flow in the breed. DNA analysis based on 18 microsatellite loci revealed that genetic diversity (observed heterozygosity ¼ 0.663, gene diversity ¼ 0.675 and the mean number of alleles ¼ 7.056) in the Lipizzan horse is similar to other horse breeds as well as to other domestic animal species. The genetic differentiation between Lipizzan horses from different studs, although moderate, was apparent (pairwise FST coefficients ranged from 0.021 to 0.080). Complementary findings explaining the genetic relationship among studs were revealed by genetic distance and principal component analysis. One genetic cluster consisted of the subpopulations of Austria, Italy and Slovenia, which represent the classical pool of Lipizzan horse breeding. A second cluster was formed by the Croatian, Hungarian and Slovakian subpopulations. The Romanian subpopulation formed a separate unit. The largest genetic differentiation was found between the Romanian and Italian subpopulation. Genetic results are consistent with the known breeding history of the Lipizzan horse. Correct stud assignment was obtained for 80.9% and 92.1% of Lipizzan horses depending on the inclusion or exclusion of migrant horses, respectively. The results of the present study will be useful for the development of breeding strategies, which consider classical horse breeding as well as recent achievements of population and conservation genetics.

Abstract: The contribution of the vagus nerve to viral transneuronal labeling of brain structures from the ovaries demonstrated recently by us was investigated. Unilateral vagotomy was performed prior to ipsilateral intraovarian virus injection. Virus-infected neurons were visualized by immunostaining. In vagotomized rats such neurons were detected only in certain cell groups of the brain (parapyramidal nucleus, A1, A5 cell group, caudal raphe nuclei, hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus, lateral hypothalamus). Vagotomy interfered with labeling of several structures that were labeled in controls, including area postrema, nucleus of the solitary tract, dorsal vagal complex, nucleus ambiguus, A7 cell group, Barrington’s nucleus, locus coeruleus, periaqueductal gray, dorsal hypothalamus. Findings provide a morphological basis to study the functional significance of brain structures presumably involved in the control of ovarian function and acting via the vagus or the sympathetic nerves.

TL;DR: The diagnostic value of 2 plasma acute-phase proteins, haptoglobin and alpha1-acid glycoprotein, and plasma N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase enzyme activity were studied in newly calved dairy cows and suggest that in acute uterine infection a highly increased haaptoglobin concentration indicates poor prognosis for repeat conception.
