TL;DR: A deeper understanding of these factors helps to utilize feedstuffs as a protein source more efficiently.
Abstract: Utilization of dietary protein depends not only on the amino acid composition and the digestibility of the protein itself, but also upon the level of protein, feed intake, energy, fibre, and other constituents in the feed. On the other hand, the animal species, sex, age and health status may also play an important role. A deeper understanding of these factors helps to utilize feedstuffs as a protein source more efficiently.

TL;DR: Urinary estrogen output was determined by thin layer chromatography and the Kober-Ittrich reaction to study the relation of such hormones to the estrous cycle and to the physiological changes occurring in the cervix and vagina, including the pattern of cervical mucus arborization.
Abstract: Summary Urinary estrogen output was determined by thin layer chromatography and the Kober-Ittrich reaction in 5 ewes to study the relation of such hormones to the estrous cycle and to the physiological changes occurring in the cervix and vagina, including the pattern of cervical mucus arborization. A further 5 animals were examined every other day during the cycle to confirm the results of arborization. The total estrogen output was found to increase from 121.40 μ/g./liter at 4 days after ovulation to 267.78 μg./liter at two days before the following ovulation. On the day of the first estrus the recorded value was 285.21 μg./liter. The ratio between estrone, 17 alpha estradiol and estriol varied but the first two hormones were present at a much higher concentration than the third one in most of the periods examined. Large typical arborizations were recorded on the day of ovulation, accompanied by marked clinical changes in the cervix and vagina. Small-sized arborization was seen 2 days before and 4 days after ovulation. The physical changes which occurred in the cervical mucus during the cycle were related to the incidence of arborization and the clinical condition of the cervix and vagina. The relation between these findings and the urinary estrogen output was apparent and is discussed in the text.
