Abstract: Bandicoot rats (genus Bandicota), widely known as rodent pests, are abundant and widespread throughout the continental part of the Indo-Malayan realm. However, their evolutionary history is not yet well understood. The molecular phylogenetic relationships of the three bandicoot rat species, Bandicota bengalensis, Bandicota indica, and Bandicota savilei, were assessed based on the gene sequences of the specimens collected from Myanmar, where all three species occur along with database sequences. Early divergence of B. savilei (1.5–1.7 million years ago) was inferred from the mitochondrial cytochrome b (Cytb) gene and the nuclear interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding protein (Irbp), and melanocortin 1 receptor (Mc1r) gene sequences. The Cytb lineage of B. bengalensis from Sri Lanka was distinct from the monophyletic lineage of the continental lineages of B. bengalensis and B. indica. This can be explained by the preservation of ancient mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in the insular population owing to female philopatry and male dispersal, given that no substantial intraspecies geographic subdivision was observed in the nuclear markers. The paraphyletic relationship of B. bengalensis with B. indica may be explained by introgression of the mtDNA from B. bengalensis to B. indica, but further investigation is required to confirm this. B. bengalensis Cytb sequences from a wide area of Myanmar had limited nucleotide diversity (π = 0.00079), implying that the genetic diversity of B. bengalensis in Myanmar was acquired through Holocene human activities.

Abstract: The authors have revealed the main value characteristics of pork production by testing in five different types of pig the volume of contractile and collagen proteins, that of proteoglycans, the constituents of blood and the enzymes of the blood plasma. The contractile proteins of the muscle tissues basically determine the quality of pork. The same applies to the water retention capacity, colloidal characteristics and glycogen content of meat. The amount of contractile proteins has decreased in the best meat producing types of pig. Parallel with the decrease of white meat, and with the increase in the volume of ham, chop and chuck the contractile protein content of muscles decreased. The scientific fact according to which there is a certain correlation among the changes in the volume of contractile proteins, blood sugar level, blood serum CPK and the intensity of activity of the LDH enzymes promotes the qualifying of live animals and the work of the geneticists aiming at the increasing of the contractile protein content of the muscle tissues of pigs by selection. According to tests carried out by us the primary cause of PSE changes is a decreased volume of contractile proteins. Increased stress sensitivity and all the other factors have but a secondary importance and are all consequential. The decrease in the quantity of contractile proteins or--it is better to put it this way--the lack of the proper amount of such proteins characterizing a fully developed pig's organism is caused by the nowadays usual breeding technologies and can be well explained by those selection activities which aim at a one-sided kind of pork production.

Abstract: The consequences of heat processing of feeds for sterilization and to destroy antinutritive substances can be beneficial as well as detrimental. Damages to feed proteins may be primarily explained by complex reactions between proteins and carbohydrates, by interactions between protein molecules and by oxidation. The chemical mechanisms and nutritional consequences of these reactions are reviewed.

Abstract: The oviducts of 16 Saanen does, superovulated with folliclestimulating hormone (FSH) and synchronised with prostaglandin F2α were flushed 75 to 86 hours after the injection of prostaglandin. The mean (sd) ovulation rate was 13.7 (3.9). The flushings were directed orthograde through a flexible intravenous catheter, which was introduced into the oviduct via the infundibulum. The flushing medium was recovered by a balloon-catheter, which was placed in the uterine lumen near the uterotubal junction. Five does were flushed unilaterally either because they had one blocked oviduct or because they had ovulated on only one ovary. The overall embryo recovery rate was 72 per cent. Nine weeks later 11 of the donor ewes were examined laparoscopically and no adhesions of the reproductive organs were observed. Eight of these does were synchronised with progestagen-vaginal sponges, superovulated with FSH and their oviducts were flushed again. Their mean ovulation rate was 16.0 (4.3) and 86 per cent of the embryos were recovered. The optimal time to obtain pronuclear stage embryos was 75 to 78 hours after the injection of prostaglandin. All the embryos recovered within this period were at the pronuclear stage whereas 28 per cent of those recovered one to six hours later were at the two- or four-cell stage.
