Abstract: The use of crop residues and agricultural by-products in animal feeding is a very common practice in Myanmar. Nutritive values and fermentation characteristics of natural grass (NG), lablab bean stalk-fresh (LLBF), butter bean residue-dry (BBRD), sesame residue-dry (SRD), sorghum stover-dry (SSD) and sorghum stover-fresh (SSF) were evaluated through in vitro gas production method. The crude protein (CP) content of Lablab bean stalk-fresh (LLBF) was significantly higher than those of other feedstuffs with the least CP obtained from sorghum stover-dry (SSD). The contents of NDF, ADF and EE ranged from 58.95 to 80.03, 36.63 to 67.76 and 2.15 to 2.89, respectively. The cumulative gas volumes at 24 hrs ranked from the highest to the lowest; BBRD, NG, SRD, LLBF, SSD and SSF. However, the gas volume of SSD was significantly higher (P<0.05) than those of other feedstuffs at the 96 hrs of incubation time. The highest gas production rate “c” was found in SRD and the lowest was in SSD. While the fermentation of insoluble fraction “b” of SSD was significantly higher (P<0.05) than those of other feedstuffs, the LLBF was the highest in the fermentation of quickly soluble fraction “a”. The estimated total carbohydrate (TC), non fibre carbohydrate (NFC), metabolizable energy (ME), organic matter digestibility (OMD), short chain fatty acid (SCFA) and methane gas concentration are significantly different (P<0.05) among the experimental feedstuffs. According to the findings of this study, all of these conventional feedstuffs have the good potential to be used as ruminant feed.

Abstract: USING correlated light and electron microscopic pre-embedding enkephalin immunocytochemistry combined with post-embedding GABA immunogold staining, we found morphological evidence of a direct connection between the enkephalinergic and GABAergic systems in the rat hippocampus. Enkephalin-immunoreactive boutons were found to be presynaptic to GABA-immunoreactive postsynaptic profiles, establishing type 2 symmetrical synapses on GABA-positive cell bodies and dendritic shafts in strata radiatum and lacunosum moleculare of the CA1 region. Thirty-six percent of all studied postsynaptic targets (n = 40) were non-pyramidal, including all somatic (n = 7) and 47% of the dendritic (n = 13) postsynaptic targets. The remaining 64% consisted of pyramidal dendritic shafts and spines. These results support previous physiological experiments suggesting that the opioidergic system takes part in disinhibitory processes in the hippocampal formation.

Abstract: The species composition and genetic diversity of the subgenus Mus in Myanmar are not yet fully understood. In this study, mice were trapped in rural areas near the Ayeyarwady River basin, spanning five Myanmar cities from north to south: Mandalay, Bagan, Magway, Pyay, and Yangon. Mitochondrial cytochrome b (Cytb) and nuclear melanocortin 1 receptor (Mc1r) gene sequences were determined for mice sampled and revealed a widespread occurrence of Mus nitidulus in central Myanmar in addition to its previously known occurrence in the Yangon district of southern Myanmar. Analyses of Cytb revealed two haplogroups with a genetic distance of 2.0%, suggestive of divergence several hundred thousand years ago. Mus caroli and M. musculus were confined to Yangon and Mandalay/Bagan/Magway, respectively. Mice collected from a locality on the eastern side of the Ayeyarwady River in Pyay were identified using Cytb and Mc1r sequences as M. fragilicauda, which was previously identified only in Laos and Thailand. The species M. booduga and M. cervicolor previously predicted to be common in the study area were not found. These findings elucidate the species and genetic diversity of the subgenus Mus in the Indo-Malayan Region.

Abstract: Vimentin contributes to the cytoskeleton of different cell-types, among them glial cells. We report here that different forms of this protein, distinguishable by the monoclonal antibodies Vim3B4 and V9, are species-specifically expressed in cultures of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) positive, primary astrocytes of the chicken and rat. Most cells in the cultures co-expressed GFAP and one of the two vimentin epitopes. The Vim3B4 positive epitope was present in chicken astrocytes, while the V9 positive was not. Inverse situation was found in the astrocytes of rat. In vitro age of the cells did not influence the hierarchy of vimentin epitope expression with respect to species-specificity. Our result shows that the different vimentin expression program of cultured astrocytes of the chicken and rat is preserved under in vitro conditions. The presented data support the concept of the species-specific regulation of vimentin forms in glial cells of the central nervous system.
