TL;DR: It is concluded that the possible relationship of thyroid hormone levels and blood pH is a complex one and the underlying mechanism requires further study.
Abstract: Thyroid hormone levels in the plasma and blood pH were compared in 38 newborn calves and their dams immediately at parturition, then 24 and 72 h thereafter. Both thyroid hormone levels and pH exhibit much higher variation in calves than in cows. Applying a linear model at different sampling times, a weak (r = -0.112 to -0.397) but significant (P less than 0.05) negative correlation was found between thyroid hormone levels and blood pH in calves 24 and 72 h postpartum. At birth, when no correlation was found with linear approach, a polynomial regression model showed curvilinear relationship between thyroid hormone levels and blood pH in calves. Since these correlations could not be substantiated by comparing data of different sampling times, one can conclude that the possible relationship of thyroid hormone levels and blood pH is a complex one. Revealing the underlying mechanism of the above observations requires further study.

TL;DR: A delay in the maturation of the GFAP‐immunopositive glial system may contribute to the hindered development of the bulbar neurones, neuronal connections, and field potentials, as found in earlier studies.
Abstract: Young rats were subjected to low-level, repeated doses of x-irradiation from a Co60 source and examined for the presence and arrangement of their GFAP-immunopositive system at the light and electron microscopic levels. In 2-week-old control rats, labelled cells were already distributed homogeneously throughout the bulb, while in the experimental animals, a (newborn- and early postnatal-type) radial arrangement of immunoreactive fibres continued to persist even until the end of the fourth postnatal week. This delay in the maturation of the GFAP-immunopositive glial system may contribute to the hindered development of the bulbar neurones, neuronal connections, and field potentials, as found in earlier studies.

TL;DR: To meet the requirements of pigs a better supply of amino acids can be achieved by using ileal digestibility data of feed ingredients in least-cost feed formulation, and the use of the ideal protein concept helps to minimize nitrogen excretion.
Abstract: To meet the requirements of pigs a better supply of amino acids can be achieved by using ileal digestibility data of feed ingredients in least-cost feed formulation. Digestibility of amino acids can be improved by addition of multienzyme products, antimicrobial additives and probiotics. Protein accretion may be positively influenced by beta-adrenergic agonists. An adequate ratio of protein to dietary energy is essential to achieve optimal protein utilization. Nitrogen output can be minimized by improving feed efficiency and by eliminating antinutritional substances with adequate processing. The use of the ideal protein concept helps to minimize nitrogen excretion. Management and animal hygiene also have a significant impact on the overall nitrogen balance in animal production.

TL;DR: In this article , a ten-year prevalence of mortality of all the species and categories of animals regularly scheduled for slaughter in the Czech slaughterhouses was assessed as dead on arrival after road transport from 2010 to 2019.
Abstract: Animals may be subjected to various stressors during transport, which may compromise their health and welfare as well as meat quality. In the chain of operations between a farm and a slaughterhouse, animal transport is probably the most stressful and injurious stage. Data on mortality is commonly collected at slaughterhouse as a retrospective indicator of animal welfare during transport. Ten-year prevalence of mortality of all the species and categories of animals (cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, poultry, rabbits and ostriches) regularly scheduled for slaughter in the Czech slaughterhouses was assessed as dead on arrival after road transport from 2010 to 2019. Among livestock, the highest mortality was found in pigs (0.065%); statistically higher compared to cattle (0.027%) and sheep (0.015%). In animals shipped in containers (rabbits, broiler chickens, end-of-lay hens, turkeys, geese and ducks), the highest prevalence was found in laying hens (0.507%), statistically higher compared to broiler chickens (0.425%) and rabbits (0.199%). The lowest prevalence was observed in geese (0.003%). There was a trend for decreasing death losses of pigs in more recent years and losses in broiler chickens and ducks increased. The results indicate that the current transport conditions should be re-evaluated for poultry. Emphasis should be put on the assessment of animal fitness before transport. This is especially important for animals at the end of their production cycle such as dairy cows, sows, and laying hens. They were more likely to die during the journey. HighlightsDead on arrival is an animal-based measure commonly applied at slaughterhouse as a retrospective indicator of animal welfare during transport. In a cross-species comparison, the highest prevalence was observed for animals transported in cages and for end of production cycle animals. To reduce mortality, several factors have to be considered by the meat industry other than the species-related ability to cope with transport.
