Abstract
In recent years, great emphasis has been placed on the role of arterial stiffness in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Indeed, the assessment of arterial stiffness is increasingly used in the clinical assessment of patients. Although several papers have previously addressed the methodological issues concerning the various indices of arterial stiffness currently available, and their clinical applications, clinicians and researchers still report difficulties in selecting the most appropriate methodology for their specific use. This paper summarizes the proceedings of several meetings of the European Network for Non-invasive Investigation of Large Arteries and is aimed at providing an updated and practical overview of the most relevant methodological aspects and clinical applications in this area.

Update on Pathophysiology and Treatment of Hypertension in the Elderly

TL;DR: This review discusses in detail the various landmark hypertension studies in the elderly and recommends use of thiazide diuretics, long-acting calcium channel blockers, and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotENSin II receptor blockers as either monotherapy or in combination, with beta-blockers reserved for patients with specific indications.

Sex Differences in the Associations of Hemodynamic Load With Left Ventricular Hypertrophy and Concentric Remodeling.

TL;DR: The findings suggest that aortic stiffness and greater early, pulsatile hemodynamic load affect left ventricular concentric remodeling in a sex-specific manner.

Applanation Tonometry in Mice: A Novel Noninvasive Technique to Assess Pulse Wave Velocity and Arterial Stiffness

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the development and validation of a novel technique to assess carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) noninvasively in mice.

Quantification of aortic stiffness using magnetic resonance elastography: Measurement reproducibility, pulse wave velocity comparison, changes over cardiac cycle, and relationship with age.

TL;DR: MR elastography‐derived aortic shear stiffness measurements for reproducibility, comparison to pulse wave velocity, changes over the cardiac cycle, and relationship with age are assessed.

Implications of early aortic stiffening in patients with transposition of the great arteries after arterial switch operation.

TL;DR: Impaired aortic bioelasticity was strongly associated with age, suggesting the usefulness of follow-up studies for early onset of degenerative cardiovascular disease.

Aortic stiffness is an independent predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in hypertensive patients.

TL;DR: This study provides the first direct evidence that aortic stiffness is an independent predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with essential hypertension.
